Help with i7 8700k on Maximus X Code

NGCathey

HI,

I need a lot of help with overclocking my system.

Basic System information
• ROG Maximus X Code – BIOS 2.17.1246
• I7 8700K
• Corsair H115i AIO
• 32GB G. Skills DDR4 3600
• Samsun 1TB m.2 drive
• EVGA GTX 1080 GTX
• Corsair AX860i
• Windows 10 Pro
• Crucial 500 GB SSD
• Munskin 250 SSD (old)
• WD TB HDD
• WD 1 TB HDD

I know that my BIOS isn’t up to date, but after getting this motherboard 12/26/18 and getting up and running, I updated the BIOS. I think that it completed successfully, but later that day my system would not POST (had RGB lights but nothing else). After RMA the mb and cpu, I am very leary about updating the BIOS.

My first attempt a few days ago was at multiple of 45. It did complete the 15-minute REAL Bench stress test but the max core temperature was 91 C. I did figure out that the Vcore ranged up to 1.4 volts, so I am assuming that was what caused the high temperatures.

Since then I found Raja’s guide for the i7 7600K and the ROG mb. I tried to follow those steps this morning. Settings tried to date are:

  • MP 49 Vcore 1.30 – System would not boot into widows
  • MP 48 Vcore 1.30 – System booted, ran RealBendh – Temps ~78C, Crashed after about 4 minutes with “DPC_Watchdog_Violation
  • MP 48 Vcore 1.302 – System booted, ran RealBendh – Temps ~78C, Crashed after about 4 minutes with “DPC_Watchdog_Violation
  • MP 48 Vcore 1.304 – System booted, ran RealBendh – Temps ~79C, Crashed after about 4 minutes with “DPC_Watchdog_Violation
  • MP 49 Vcore 1.315 – System booted, ran RealBendh – Temps ~80C, Crashed after about 4 minutes with “DPC_Watchdog_Violation
  • MP 48 Vcore 1.315 – System booted, ran RealBendh – Temps ~80C, Crashed after about 5 minutes with “DPC_Watchdog_Violation

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated!!

TIA,
Nathan

It has a lot of reasons behind it. You need to browse because it has very lengthy solution.

Test the CPU stability in Realbench once again but without XMP enabled.

You may want to evaluate what you're stress testing with based on what your workload is.

Thanks for the help. I am not running XMP at this time but the memory setting is in auto.

I am guessing (and it is just a guess from me) that the main reason I am seeing the DPS_Watchdog_Violation error is because my overclock is failing. I did go back and try a multiplier or 48 @ 1.315 Vcore and a AVX -3 setting. With those settings, the system booted and passed real bench.

I did some more testing tonight to try and get to 49 with AVX -3. That failed at 1.325 Vcore and AVX-4. Went back to 48 and 1.315 and AVX -3 and that FAILED.

Now back at base and VERY concerned about trying anything else.

All the above is with Adaptive control selected. I have read in some post online that adaptive mode isn't working correctly. Can anyone tell me if that is true?

HELP!!!

hi there,

google:

DPS_Watchdog_Violation error sata drvier intel

Had it myself. Played around with drivers as mentioned in 2 sites.
Did a lot of OC testing afterwards.
Never got it back.

ps AIO = VRM needs love via fan
orig. Asus VRM-mount + 40x40 n....a fan i use myself.

THAT cool asus metall mount cools EVOs on slot 2 better than the 3D print one btw.
.. And the 3D mount must be heavily modified to fit. The handle is over one 4 pin-pwr-port for example

Adaptive should work fine, there is an issue on some boards/builds where the negative offset was failing to register, however, as you're not using a negative offset that is irrelevant to this. You should be simply entering the desired final turbo voltage into the Additional Turbo Voltage field.

You want to be finding your AVX stable clocks without the use of the offset function if using RB, before addressing non-AVX workloads.

As per my post above, you may want to re-evaluate what you're using to stress test the system if not using AVX instructions in your day to day workloads. I find XTU stress test is fairly decent on this platform for this purpose.

Try setting a LLC setting of 6-7 under Digi+ Settings

Set IA DC Load Line & IA AC Load Line to 0.01 under Extreme Tweaker / CPU Power Management

Given you were seeing some stability initially, you may need slightly more vcore. Up to 1.35v is fine.

These may help.

Hi Silent Scone,

Thanks for the tips. I will give the LLC setting a try (tomorrow or Saturday. I do have the IA AC and IADC set to 0.01.

A few questions for you.
1) is there a good source/reference that explain all the settings in the Extreme Tweaker, what they and what they are for?

2)My system is now booting SLOW as heck. It takes about 2 - 3 minutes to run through the boot sequence. I have it reset to the vbase setings. The last two thinks I tried was a MP of 49 with a Vcore of 1.325. If failed Real bench. The next thing I tried was to reset to base of set XMP to 3600. Boy it did NOT like that. After that it runs slow as heck. Any ideaswhy, or suggestions to reset.

Thanks again,
Nathan

A multiplier of 49 with no offset on AVX is tough. You need to lower your expectations. Find your AVX stable ratio first without the use of the offset as already suggested.
