Help - Bios default settings gone wrong - Maximus VI Formula

I was using 4 way optimization to automatically overclock my system, however I got a blue screen shortly after logging into windows. After the blue screen I went into BIOS/UEFI and loaded default settings, but then I realized that the settings were wrong, the core tab was set to sync all core. I then returned it to auto mode and tried to load windows. In windows using AI suite III realized that my CPU frequency is stuck at 3600mhz and does not drop to 800mhz or go up 3800mhz as it did before I started overclocking.

Loading default settings does not help as it changes “sync all cores” and probably other things. I have tried to clear cmos and have also tried to update the bios, but the default settings are still wrong.

What has gone wrong here and how can I return the bios to the initial stage?

My system is:
Asus Maximus VI Formula
Intel 4670k
Corsair Vengeance Pro 16gb 1600
Asus GTX 770

I have the identical problem on my board, and it will not reset.

Not only that, but I did a word search on the motherboard manual, and cannot find any indication of the cmos battery's location, and can't see it anywhere on my motherboard.

Does this board in fact have a cmos battery? Can someone tell me where it actually is?

Welcome to the ROG forums, monsoon.

The battery for the Maximus VI Formula is located between the first and secon PCIe lanes. Unfortunately you need to remove the thermal armor to get there.

well that's special... i'm guessing I have to pull the motherboard to remove a screw or three on the back, as well as remove the heatsink in order to lift it up?
what could possess Asus to make this so complicated? every motherboard made will eventually require a new battery...

Have you tried the suggestions in my previous posts before taking your battery out?

yes, I read multiple threads of people having problems with this here, as well as on other forums.
not only did I press the rear panel clear button, but I did it several times while holding the power on button. and I wasn't just tapping the button, I was holding it down for a good 10 seconds or so. that was with the power cord disconnected, as well as also having tried the jumper pin at the top of the motherboard by itself, although I didn't do it at the same time as the clear cmos button as I believe it disables that button somehow.
every combination of events led to the same overclocking settings that won't allow the computer to boot.
and to make matters worse, i'd just finished the install, with all the settings and applications, browser settings, antivirus/firewall installs, the computer was ready to go to my son.
and i've got xmp enabled gskill trident memory, which showed up right away as 2400. this should have been able to work.

so I guess my last question then is whether I can leave this plastic cover off.

I don't intend to ever have to deal with this buggy situation again by disassembling the computer.

i've no intention of ever water cooling this build, so is the shield necessary in there?

edit* yeah, nevermind. I can see that the shield is just the plastic cover. the heatsink part is still attached to the motherboard.
this shield is not going back on.

I just now finished redoing the thermal paste, and putting the heatsink back on. I did the power on button with the cmos clear button, just in case, and will put the battery back in, in a minute along with the power cord.
Hopefully this is back to factory specs then.
