HELP 4.9ghz max on Maximus X Hero

Hi people,

I have tried the Der8auer overclocking guide and for an unknown reason it will not go past 4901mhz when running cinebench, realbench or prime95. I have tried all AVX 0-3 and that does not change the max. I even changed multiplier to 51 and still sits at 4.9. Custom watercooled and not delidded and it peaks at 86c but fluctuates around the 79-82c. XMP profile is active at 3000 and system is stable been using it since Christmas without a BSOD or anything strange. Gaming will have the temp in the mid 60's. I've tried looking around for other OC tutorials for this board but can only find the Der8auer one.

I had 805 and now the 1003 bios and still the same. I know there is a setting somewhere that is probably causing this but i just can't find it. vcore 1.312, 1.328 and 1.344v all have stable system. I had a Gigabyte Gaming7 previously and 5.0Ghz on my Delidded 7700k was easy in that bios and I've not had an Asus for about 10+ years. Any and all help or even a link that i have missed pointing to full BIOS settings would help.

Format a USB stick with FAT32.
Save as many relevant screenshots from BIOS on it and post them.

Try Manual on RAM (No XMP)
SVID Behavior set to Best case
Set AVX 0 (Just for testing)
LLC 6 (Not 5)
VCORE 1.350 (might work with 1.340 but just to be sure)
Cache Ratio Auto or 42 max for 5.0Ghz. Too much heat for almost no gain with increased cache speed
CPU Current Capability set to Auto
VRM Spread Spectrum set to Disabled
Disable integrated graphics (if you have a dedicated GPU). Less heat
Disable SpeedStep,SpeedShift,C-States (Just for testing)
Check your Windows power plan and make sure your CPU is set to 100% min max (Performance)

That is all that comes to mind.
I have my i7 8700k @ 4.7Ghz all cores with 1.180V (1.168 seen in Windows). Less heat, hardware strain and noise for minimal performance loss.
Will set it to 5.0Ghz and post screenshots just in case I missed something

Replies next to your points, appreciate the ideas and I'm going to be honest the Gigabyte board was far easier to OC and quicker to get it right kind of regretting the Asus board now as it isn't as easy to get an OC oops I mean was easy to hit 4.9 but nothing higher lol.

Sorry to hear you having difficulties reaching your desired OC. I am sure you can get there as long as your CPU is capable

Start simple, clear cmos, set F5 defaults, sync all cores, 50, reboot and see if it will automatically set bootable voltage for 5.0ghz, do not set XMP or any other settings at this time
If you can boot to Windows use a monitoring program of your choice and write down all voltages, this will give you a baseline to start

AVX set to auto = 0 offset, if you try to set 0 it will set offset to 1

ASUS ROG boards may set tighter secondary memory timings when you use XMP than other boards which may be troublesome without a little fine tuning but more satisfying when you have it setup

Thanks mate yeah I'll give it a go, I mean 4.9 stable 70c temp under load isn't bad but I just like to see how far I can push it before I Delid it. Only the 8700k and mobo were changed and XMP on the ram worked perfectly with the 7700k max 5.1GHz 1.389v and Gigabyte board so that's why I didn't try manual dram settings. I did try just the 50 multiplier and everything else as Auto apart from using XMP and it was topping out at 4.9 and 1.424V hit 98c on 2 of the cores and the other low 90's that's when I looked at Der8auer video. Really appreciate the help and will try the options.

Also Not sure if Asus see these posts but Gigabyte has a drop down box with the processors and OC speeds and those work as a base and just have to play with Vcore and LLC. I.e i7 7700K 4.8, 4.9 and 5.0GHz you just click it and it will reach those speeds.

But yeah anyone else have ideas I will try them too. 

Even different ASUS boards have different options, I have used Hero's for my daily rig for several generations as it has a good power section VRM and most of the bios options, presets of the top end boards without the frills.
My Hero also has Gamer OC preset, 5.0ghz preset and several others for high memory frequencies and such, I don't understand why if you manually enter 50 it tops out at 49 unless you have AVX offset at 1, that is not my experience

I even tried the gamer preset and yes max 4.9.
Tried 51 and still 4.9 in all stress tests and 100% CPU load all cores.
Tried AVX on every setting and still 4.9 well depending on the AVX 3 = 4.7 AVX 2 = 4.8 AVX 1 = 4.9 AVX 0 = 4.9 AVX Auto = 4.9

AVX 2 and under crashed Cinebench 1.312v 4.8ghz and AVX 3 1.312v 4.7 stable. Also AVX 2 @ 1.34v stable.

I'm going to try turning XMP off and see if that makes the difference. I've run memtest before and after changing to Asus and no errors. If it is XMP is this a board fault or something else?

If anyone has 5.0 can they put up screenshots and I'll run exact settings to see.

You should disconnect power to the board for a couple minutes, clear cmos and only make changes for CPU, leave memory at default until you get this cleared up
If this doesn't help I can post some screens tomorrow
