Haswell overclock

Hey there all! I am playing around with my clocks and have gotten my 4770k to be stable through 10 iterations of intel burn test on maximum stress setting at 4.4 ghz with the ram at 2.4 ghz and it reached 83C I have a 360 rad and a 240 rad custom loop. Does this sound like a decent result? I'm going to see how stable I can get the CPU clock without a ram overclock but ibt came up with just over 128 gigaflops which seems to be a nice result. Just hotter than I hoped 😕 be back soon with another overclock. Let me know your thoughts please 🙂

I know it isn't really the best chip produced but if will do 4.6 with the ram at 2.4 just won't pass intel. It passes cinebench and realbench but once I touch 4.7 windows barely starts. So not great chip not terrible chip?

4.6 ghz Runs through the first two tests perfectly and gets to the physics test and quickly goes from 55 to 63 and crashes. Maybe it is a thermal issue and the internal temperature is at the throttle but the sensor hasn't caught up with it? Maybe worth a delidding. I'll see when warranty is out 🙂 haha

63 degrees is not a problem for a short duration, if during physice the system crashes than the error lies in the CPU/CACHE/SYSTEM AGENT/IO voltages area or with the DRAM.

try running only the physics and combined test without oc-ing the GPU at all, that makes it easier to find the cause of the crash (did you get a BSOD or ?? which OS are you using?).

As for cpu throttling, this occurs only if your cores reach TJ-max (which differs per CPU). Check the tool CoreTemp to see your tj-max.

Hey that is a nice tool! My TJmax is 100C so I'm nowhere close to it. Closest I have been to that is an 83C spike when starting the intel stability test. I am running windows 8.1 Pro x64 and I keep getting their new "updated" BSOD so I will clock the ram way down again as well as the GPUs and try just those tests. Thanks!

You are welcome JEFRECH14! I am putting together a list of programs with how to with respect to hardware monitoring. I will post it within a couple of days. It also deals about BSOD and DAMS as I call them. DAMS stands for Dumb Ass Microsoft Smiley... I have a solution for easily getting into the details of that DAMS. to be continued.

By the way...how are you measuring temps...just so we're all on the same page....core temps right with Coretemp or Realtemp?

I will list more later since it is so late and I'm still working on it but... I got overwhelmed with the desire to try something cool and new so I delidded it and everything I was testing at 4.4 ghz I am doing at 4.6. I have 2600 ram set, gpu core clock at 1300 and memory clock at 4400. Just barely doesn't pass the last few seconds of firestrike but I lowered the vcore so if I put it back to 1.3300 it should be good again. Temp in the physics section reached 65. I am using my oc panel mostly in combination with core temp as well as the 3dmark temp and ai suites temp as backups. I got 13742 so far on firestrike

Odd thing is I just ran it in extreme mode and temps were 10c less in physics segment

OK understood...just to say.Ai suite the OC pannel etc all report CPU temp which is not core temps and your core temps can be 10+ degrees different. Core temps is what you want to read. I would recommend RealTemp...records max and min in the background and consumes no system resources..

Oh and if you have more than one of these open at the same time your readings may well be inaccurate anyway...two programs polling the sensors can give very wrong readings...

You mention delidding, so I thought I 'd throw this in ...

My dog of a CPU will do 4.4GHz at 1.3Vcore with or without delidding. I think that's worse performance than yours. After delidding and using water cooling, this CPU reaches 4.7GHz, realbench stable, at 1.50Vcore and temperature stays below 80C. It can even do a little better with BCLK adjustment, albeit at even higher voltage. Delidding allows for higher power that results from higher voltage that allows higher core clock.

The point is that delidding will not prove you have only a 4.5GHz CPU -- it will let you get to the stable 4.7 or 4.8GHz it's really capable of.

I am so exhausted after working to get this haha. It was tough work getting it stable in realbench. Realbench is a lot more stressful than 3DMark. I can run 3DMark easily 4.6 but realbench had to go up way higher! Realtemp showed a peak at 88C but during the 100% load tests it showed core 1 being the highest at about 82 average. I gotta work on that openCL score.

Ram: 2400 MHz @ 1.760 volts
CPU: 4600 MHz @ 1.472 volts
GPU: ~ 1250 MHz core 4400 MHz memory

What do you guys think?
