Haswell Overclock - Should I Live With It?

Folks,

Just completed a new build and "upgraded" to the i4770K chip running on a Asus Maximus VI Hero mobo. Despite my best efforts, I can't seem to get a stable overclock passed 4.3gHz. Should I live with this, or roll the dice on a new processor and sell this one? So far, I'm not too impressed with Haswell. I needed 1.35v to get a stable overclock at 4.3, running memory at 2400mHz. Temps on the CPU are around 33c at idle, and as high as 73c at 100% using the Asus benchmark software....

My Realbench V2 score is - 79857

I did delid the proc as well.... Was hoping to get to at least 4.4. 😞

Cheers!

Last time I used Asus software to measure temps, it showed temps that were about 10°C cooler than other software. Apparently it as showing case temp, not junction temp. So I ditched it and went with Core Temp. You might want to confirm your temps with something like that.

That might make it hard to sell.

Join the Hasawell dissapointment club man!
i got mine stable at 4.4GHz with 1.290v. But when i want to go to 4.5GHz i have to push the vcore till 1.37v for a bit of stability ( it will run the ASUS benchmark but will fail after a couple of hours with intel burning test, prime and aida64 )

If youre goal is overclocking and benchmarking i would say yes sell this one and try your luck with another one, bur if its just for daily use and gaming.. 4.3GHz is more than enough actually.

Not gonna be easy selling a delidded CPU, but, having said that. i'd wait for the refresh that will be out soon...it's got solder under the IHS, which, should hopefully bring OC ability back up to a better level than Haswell does at the moment.

Thanks guys.... Monitoring temps via Real Temp, and deleted the AI Suite software.... I guess I'm going to have to live with the lame chip. Will tje Haswell replacement be based on the LGA 1150 chipset, or will it require a new MOBO?

'Haswell Refresh' will be supported in Z87. Intel has yet to announce whether there will be a K series as part of the refresh though
'Devils Canyon' (whatever official code this becomes) will only work in Z97 boards. It has 'better' (possibly soldered) core/spreader and is unlocked.
Pentium Anniversary Edition unlocked CPUs will work in Z87.
Future 5th Generation will only work in Z97.
All LGA1150 - existing and future - will work in Z97.

You have lots of company. 4.3 @ 1.264V here and hard won.

BTW, it isn't clear yet whether the Devil's Peak refresh on the 4770k will be compatible with Z87 MB.

This is the Intel press release

http://newsroom.intel.com/community/intel_newsroom/blog/2014/03/19/intel-sets-sights-on-reinvention-...

Full details are not given in that news item, some say devils canyon might or might not work on z87.. Time will tell.

Back to your CPU: it's not bad, only limited in overclock, which for 24/7 use however is not that big of a difference with 100-200 mhz higher clocking versions..

At this pre-launch stage I'm being told it won't be, but that could change.
