Hi all,
I recently bought a G75VW online in a spur of the moment decision after researching laptops for a while. When I received the laptop, I was disappointed to see it didn't have the FHD WLED screen, I looked back at the ad and yep - I didn't read properly. The ad clearly stated HD+. Probably why I got a bargain.
Coming from a Dell XPS16 - the one where they offered a FHD RGBLED backlit screen for a short period before canning it due to cost - I couldn't accept the screen.
For one thing, the quality is significantly worse, apart from just the pixel count. I have a friend with a G55VW and his FHD screen was far more vivid, with much better viewing angles, on top of the higher res.
I enquired about returning the G75VW, but it was going to cost a 20% restocking fee. I nearly put the laptop up on ebay after having it booted up for no more than 3 minutes.
I did some research and found you can purchase replacement screens. For about $80 or so I could pick up a FHD screen, but I didn't know if it could be replaced. I researched for hours, finding nothing that would confirm or deny. The screen replacement website was very clear that I should keep my existing screen resolution. The reason given was that it could overload the GPU buying a better screen - which makes sense. Well, the G75VW does come in some variants with a GTX660m and FHD screen, so I figured I'd be OK there.
I bought the screen and figured I'd share with the people on here:
Yes, you can absolutely upgrade the screen from HD+ (1600x900) to FHD (1920x1080). It is fairly simple to do, there are youtube videos that will walk you through the whole thing if necessary (intended for replacement screens), and I have had zero issues from the moment I plugged it in. Aside from lower FPS in games, which is to be expected when running higher res. Yes, it is worth the money many times over. The new screen far far far exceeds the quality of the old one, in every aspect and not just in resolution. It still doesn't hold a candle to my Dell's screen, but it's good.
I would only do this on laptops that offer two different screens with the same GPU. Check the pin out is the same as well, the screen replacement websites usually have pics of both.
I'm still a tad annoyed - while I did my research, I somehow missed that the G750 had been released only a few days before I bought the G75 (I'm in Australia, the G750 isn't yet listed on the Asus aussie website), but I'm happy enough.
Hope this helps some people who want to upgrade, or make the same silly mistake I did.
