First true overclock. Need help.

Hey all,

I'll try to keep the intro brief. Been building computers for years. 5 this year for my friends alone. Finally made a new one for myself.

i7 3770
H60 cooler
16 gb (4x4) Samsung green ddr 1600
Gene V
EVGA GTX 670
Lian Li case
DVD Burner
Samsung 830 256gb
Spinpoint F3 1tb
OCZ Modular 750W PSU

I've installed factory ram that was timed higher than stock for the motherboard but never straight overclocked it myself. I know people have gotten to 2400 and above with this combo but I simply don't even know where to start. It has to be more than just manipulating the timings right? Do I disable things like pll overvoltage among other things? I'd like to get to 2400 stable but something like 2200 is just fine. Don't really care about ocing the proc but am willing to lightly oc it. What I'm asking is if someone would be kind enough to walk me through what I need to do, what I'm looking for, and how to tackle my first true OC. I'll be home from work in 3 hours to do this. Thanks in advance!

What motherboard are you using mate?

Most of the time all you will need to do with your ram is select the ram frequency you wish to use and then if needed adjust the voltage of the DDR as needed.

Do not assume that all 1600MHz ram will clock to 2400Mhz. Actually very few will.

Should've been more clear in my post.

Mobo: Asus Maximus Gene V
Ram: Samsung MV-3V4G3D/US (4x4gb)

I spent a lot of time picking the parts for this pc. It's the ram that reviews and hobbyists are raving about for its ability to go over 2400. I just want 2400 if not 2200. Thanks for the quick response.

Edit: Even others in the forums have gloated on their OCs with this ram. However when I look at the screen caps I see gibberish and understand that even identical setups won't OC the same. That's why I know I can't just do a carbon copy of someone else's work. But, again, those screencaps are Greek to me. : )

All good mate.

With IVY it is reasonably simple to get 2400MHz with quality ram that is true. I just do not want o provide you with a sense of expectancy that is unrealistic.

One other thing you will need to take on board is that the kit you quote were designed for the X79 platform. Below are the settings you will need to enter in your bios.

Overclocking Features (Not Guaranteed)

- 1600MHz (7-8-8-24 1N) @ 1.40v
- 1866MHz (9-9-9-27 1N) @ 1.40v
- 2000MHz (9-10-10-28 1N) @ 1.45v
- 2133MHz (10-10-10-28 1N) @ 1.45v
- 2400MHz (11-11-11-28 2N) @ 1.50v
- Asus X79 platform with 4x4GB modules (16GB total) SuperPI 32M Stable

Basically what I'm asking is how did he get to 2800 on (4x4gb). http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?279603-Looking-Detail-Baby-Monster-quot-ASUS-MAXI... Scroll down and you'll see his 4x4 setup. It's gotta be more than just primary timings and voltage right? Again, thanks for the response.

You talking about Dumo? He is a very experienced overclocker and owns one of the best Steak Houses in New York by the way. Just have a look at the number of sticks he bought.

9210

As you can see he binned quite a few my friend before he found those sticks that will do 2800MHz - HYKO 1217 ram chips by the way.

Here is a sample of what kinds of voltages you will need to set.

Figures its a proffesional over locker. There was also a post on these forums with a member trying to get from 2200 to 2400 with these sticks. I'm gonna work on it in an hour and I'll let you know my results.
