Dual Monitors / MX279H + MX299Q / Sound

Hey Asus, I have MX299 and MX279 Monitors setup in dual. I have DVI-HDMI into the MX279, but i didnt get that cable with the MX299, so now for sound I'm trying to use the Jack instead. Problem is, it seems like MX279H insists that HDMI is the audio input and not the Jack, so i can only get sound to play from 1 of the Monitors, any help would be appreciated I got the asus Z87 Deluxe mobo, so maybe if i could get realtek to play out the same output through multiple sources?

Meaning i have 2xMonitor jacked into 1xJackSplitter going into 1xMoboJack(Z87 Deluxe) / This is what i was hoping to output sound through

1 Monitor(Mx279H) connected to graphics card DVI output with HDMI-DVI. This apparently can output sound
1Monitor(MX299Q) connected to graphics card DVI output with DVI-DVI. This outputs no sound.

Besides wanting the Monitors to output sound. I am also wondering if it would be possible for me to output a seperate video and sound output to my TV via the HDMI from the MOBO.

Sorry if this makes no sense.

Basically i want my 2x Monitors to play the same sound and besides that i would also like to output a video stream with sound etc to my TV so my GF can watch movies from the computer while i play games 🙂

Hello mate

You can only have one playback device at any one time. Each of your monitors will be designated a playback device.

So what that means is this, only one sound stream at any one time. Either to your speakers, the TV for your GF to watch a movie or to the monitor.

There is no way you can stream a movie to the Telly and game at the same time, both sound streams will be active. However if you want to game with the sound muted I guess you could.

Hope that makes sense to you.

Hey There,

Cheers for the quick reply 🙂

I actually only have 1 sound output through the jack, because im using a jack splitter. Problem is the MX279H mointor doesnt seem to be able to tell that sound doesnt come from HDMI but Jack. I dont know how to change the sound INput in monitor settings. I can do this on the MX299Q Monitor.

Guess ill get a soundcard for the TV. But at least i would like both my monitors to play audio at the same time now 🙂

OK that you should be able to do, the dual monitors both playing the same sound stream. The Speaker out jack and a splitter is the logical way, assuming that both monitors have an audio in jack.

Exactly both monitors have an audio in jack. The thing is, i cant get the mx279h to play sound from the audio in jack. In the on screen settings of the MX299Q monitor i have the option to select what input i want to use for sound, but with the mx279h i cant find it.

It will play sound if i put sound in Windows to be on the HDMI output that goes into it, but i want to use jack for the very same reason so that i can have the same sound source play on both of them. And the thing is if i use HDMI on the MX279H i dont get sound on the MX299Q, because that uses the audio in jack.

If that makes any sense 🙂

It depends which monitor you have the HDMI cable, I would guess that the monitor that will not play nice with the audio is the one you are using the HDMI on.

Hey Hiviz,

Yes the one with the HDMI is not playing nice, the MX299Q would play nice with HDMI no matter what because you can actually select what input you want to use for sound. You can't do that on the MX279H for some odd reason. The MX279H apparently auto disables the jack port if you connect it via HDMI, without an option of changing this. So what i did was connect it via VGA (VGA Supports Full HD and some more @60hz+)with a VGA to DVI converter straight to GPU.

So both monitors running of the GPU, connected both monitors via Jack from the same Jack port using a Jack Splitter.

I now have sound on both monitors from the same Jack. So not 2 different outputs but via hardware split into 2 sources. Music playing fantastic and coming from all sides. Defo recommend these 2 monitors.

Next figuring out how to do sound from movies to the TV. According to threads i've found through google. Programs like Windows Media Player / VLC will let you select audio output source, so you can actually do this if your player has the feature. So will connect TV via HDMI on Mobo so i dont put strain on my GPU that i use for gaming. This mobo has intel 4600HD built in so it shouldnt be an issue for HD playback.

Just wanted to post my solutions, in case someone google/searches whatever and is struggling with the same issue in case of having dual monitor setup with built in speakers.

All the best!

Fredrik

If you can work out how to play a movie on the TV and game at the same time you post back here I want that too.

Mutha****a, got it all working now haha 😄

Okay for sound over HDMI and seperate sound on comp. Ill try and make sense of it. ( This is all via HDMI connection on MOBO and using Intel Built in GPU on Haswell)

1st. Use VLC. Go into Sound settings, use advanced mode. There you can select Sound>Output Modules. You expand it. Different modules come up. Select DirectX, there you can select where VLC Outputs Sound.

2nd. Select your tv if listed. Maybe you have to restart VLC after for it to work. Now VLC can play audio and show a picture on your TV whilst you still have the default on your comp set for something else, in my case the jack output for my dual monitors.

3rd. Now you actually have 2 different sound outputs from the same comp. ( THis would not work for netlix etc. - So you gotta go illegal and download movies to play via VLC)

PS . My Samsung TV wasnt listed in Windows. I had to reboot comp after connecting the HDMI cable before i showed up. So connect all the hardware. Restart comp and start at step 1.
