I know on some mobos the opt cpu fan runs at a set speed and does not vary. I am unfamiliar with the rampage so i don't know. You re ositioned the fans on the radiatot but they are plugged into the same header as before the change?
I have read mixed review.... some say if you have no problems don't update BIOS, some say update right away. which should I do?

Actually it sounds like you either changed fans to 3-pin models, or you plugged the fans in wrong. Look at them W/a flashlight and be certain there is no bare pin showing, and that the plug keys (little nubs) are on the same side as the mobo header key plastic protrusion. Also, you didn't say whether you set the fan control in BIOS or Asus software utility; and are you running any Asus utilities, if so, which ones? A couple of Asus utilities can override the BIOS control, and I've heard Ai Suite II also changes the BIOS settings.

That's the OPT_FANs, he is talking about CPU_OPT - they're different. Yes, HarryM, the OPT_FAN3 header in the right (top) rear corner of the mobo up by the fans does not have speed control. Be sure you did not plug in there.

yes, a 3 pin fan has no variation in rpm... and you are right. I think you've got it figured out. and I meant to add the bios not to another thread. lol too many things goin on at once. that is what I was thin king though, about to attempt 4.5ghz. wish me luck.

Hm... could your fans wiring got teared during your process? I would try to double-check that... just try to move the wires in a different position...
