BSODs in BF4 (Maximus Hero + 4770k)

I have renamed this thread to get support for my constant BSODs while playing Battlefield 4. The thread was originally created to get some overclocking help, but this issue is much more important. Please skip ahead to the bottom of page 2.

OLD ORIGINAL POST:

Hey guys, I'm trying to OC my new rig and getting nowhere fast.

My specs:
i7 4770k
VI Maximus Hero
32GB Corsair Vengeance
Corsair H80i Cooler
SLI GTX 780s
Corsair 1050w PSU

I tried a guide on this site for the 4770k + Hero, BSODs
I tried AI Suite's Performance mode BSODs
The 4-way optimization BSODs

XMP is enabled (profile 1) all other settings are at optimized defaults and system is stable.

Don't know what else to do. All hardware appears to be functioning correctly.

Thanks for any help

Might I ask how is it that many people have overclocked rigs with 32gb of ram? I doubt every one of them bought all 4 sticks in the same package. According to CPU-Z, all 4 8GB sticks are the exact same model number, just purchased at different times. What's more beneficial, OC'ing my CPU with 16GB or leaving it at 3.9 with 32?

It's a hit or miss when you mix two kits. Doesn't matter of they are the exact models. There's a reason why a 32GB kit is often more expensive than buying two 16GB kits. 😉

Since you have two different kits, I'd advise you to setup your RAM manually instead of using XMP.

Any recommendations?

Ok, done. Still would BSOD at 44 and 1.35. It worked at 41 and 1.25 but that's not much of an improvement given that the CPU now runs 10-15 degrees hotter at full load. I'm not comfortable with 85-90c on full load.

On that note, I'm using a Corsair H80i liquid cooler (which I know isn't the best for this situation), but are my temps normal? It idles at 35-40c and at 100% CPU it ranges from 70-75c. I have reinstalled the heatsink multiple times trying different amounts of thermal paste, and these are the best temps I can get. Through Corsair Link, the rad fans are set on Balanced mode. I didn't think quiet mode was safe, and putting it on Performance or Max speed makes it sound like there is a F-22 taking off in my office. I'm ok with a little noise but when I can hear my idling computer while having headphones on, that's unacceptable. I'd rather not OC than have that.

Ambient temp in room is 72c and I have a Corsiar HAF-X case with the following fan setup...
230mm intake on front of case
200mm intake on side panel
200mm exhaust on top
120mm exhaust on top (will be replacing with 200mm)
The cooler fans are set up to exhaust air out of case

I had considered reversing the radiator fans to intake as described by Corsair but I don't want my GPUs and other components to have to run hotter.

I have Corsair 200R
x2 120mm top intake
120mm rear exhaust
x2 120mm front intake
120mm bottom intake

At 4GHz I'm setting around 27-32c idle on load 46-61c temp wise I could get 4.2 4.3 np but hasswell chips just don't OC as well older chips do. My i5 650 is still set at 4.3GHz same setup (i5 650-EVGA FTW 200) and set a round 32-36c idle and around 67-70c load.

Also if you have not yet user the cleaner.exe file found here for removing AI3 cause I found the services where still running after the un-install and was lock my system up when I used CPUHW
Corsair 200R
Intel i5 4670k

EVGA GTX 760 SC
Seagate 240GB SSD
WD 750GB Storage Drive
EVGA NEX 750 Gold PSU
Windows 7 64bit

What I have found is that using XMP profiles don't work out well (for me) So I manually set the memory. Next my CPU will not hit over 4.2GHz. So I stay in the range of 4GHz - around 1.225 voltage. That's a 16% increase in performances adding about 10 - 15c more heat due my CM212 EVO that does pretty good job.

Next make a overclock profiles name it stock - stock clock with memory setting and fan settings. This way when you have to (set to stock) all you have to do is load that profile. I load defaults save then load stock profile. Make things a little EZ'er.

Since I updated the BIOS and reinstalled Windows, I haven't BSOD'd once. Played BF4 for 4 hours straight last night and never crashed. I'm on the optimized defaults of the BIOS, which have the CPU maxing out at 3.9 and the voltage is 1.2 I believe. So I'm actually OC'd right now and stable! Don't know if I have the nerve/balls/desire to attempt a hardcore overclocking after this charade.

Stupid Corsair Link (or stupid me for relying on CL) was giving me false readings on the CPU temp. Based on RealTemp, my clocks are idling at 27-33c (min to max on all 4 cores). On 100% load (ran Prime 95 for 10 minutes), it was at 61-69c. Based on this, I'd say my cooler and fan setup is fine.

And I just wiped the hard drive to clear all traces of the Asus software, plus all the other garbage. Haven't had a problem since.

Yeah it's pretty nice. The drive bays were a little annoying to set up (pins kept popping out), but all in all it's a nice tower.

Your temperatures look normal to me. If you're getting 35C to 40C on idle and 70C to 75C during load, your ambient can't be 72C. I'm guessing it should be around 25C give or take.

Remember that each CPU is different and will require a different voltage for a certain frequency. Some overclocks better than others. That's why they call it the silicon lottery.

Sorry, 72F derp

So is there anything I can do then aside from "rolling the dice" and getting another CPU (which ain't gonna happen) ?

How bout my air flow setup and rad fan direction. Would a better cooler help at all

You air flow setup looks ideal to me. A better cooler would only drop your temperature by a few degrees. For example, the difference between the H100i (considered the best in closed loop system) and your H80i is only like 10C.

Continue playing with your overclock and see if you can get it to 4.2GHz. A 300MHz increase might not seem like a lot to you but when you start playing CPU intensive games, it'll start to show.

And a sidenote on this whole stress testing and temperature thing. During daily usage, you will hardly use the CPU to 100% of its capability.
