BSODs in BF4 (Maximus Hero + 4770k)

I have renamed this thread to get support for my constant BSODs while playing Battlefield 4. The thread was originally created to get some overclocking help, but this issue is much more important. Please skip ahead to the bottom of page 2.

OLD ORIGINAL POST:

Hey guys, I'm trying to OC my new rig and getting nowhere fast.

My specs:
i7 4770k
VI Maximus Hero
32GB Corsair Vengeance
Corsair H80i Cooler
SLI GTX 780s
Corsair 1050w PSU

I tried a guide on this site for the 4770k + Hero, BSODs
I tried AI Suite's Performance mode BSODs
The 4-way optimization BSODs

XMP is enabled (profile 1) all other settings are at optimized defaults and system is stable.

Don't know what else to do. All hardware appears to be functioning correctly.

Thanks for any help

I'll try but with my extremely limited experience in OC and even more limited success, IDK how far I'll get. I don't want to have to sacrifice 16GB of RAM for 300mhz of CPU speed.

Thanks for your help

That's the fun part about overclocking. You get to learn heaps about your system. Just make sure you play safe to not damage your system, of course. 😉

Unfortunately, the not so fun part (for me) is determining what is causing my BSODs. Taking ALL overclocking settings off, returning BIOS to default still gave me BSODs in BF4.

I wiped my drive and reinstalled Windows and only my most used software. I did not install any Asus software, Corsair Link, EVGA Precision or anything else that controls my hardware performance. I am going to play BF4 on this default setup for a few days to see if I keep getting reboots. This will tell me if I have faulty hardware. Hopefully not, wish me luck! And thanks again

EDIT: It turns out that I didn't have the most recent BIOS for my MB. I thought I had updated through AI Suite but apparently not. I am now running the most recent version (1203), verified in the EZ Mode BIOS. Downloaded all the most recent drivers from the ASUS site. Also looks like Corsair Link was giving me incorrect temperature readings for the CPU (compared to RealTemp which is showing readings of up to 10 degrees less). That isn't surprising seeing as how I had to do a registry hack just to get the radiator fans and pump info to show up in Win 8.1

So I'm going to give it a go as-is to see if it's stable. Will report back in a couple days. If all's good I'll try the OC again

What I have found is that using XMP profiles don't work out well (for me) So I manually set the memory. Next my CPU will not hit over 4.2GHz. So I stay in the range of 4GHz - around 1.225 voltage. That's a 16% increase in performances adding about 10 - 15c more heat due my CM212 EVO that does pretty good job.

Next make a overclock profiles name it stock - stock clock with memory setting and fan settings. This way when you have to (set to stock) all you have to do is load that profile. I load defaults save then load stock profile. Make things a little EZ'er.

Well I just BSOD'd again during BF4. It seems to always happen during some kind of transition. Like when I die, or in this case, when the round ended.

Event Viewer says: The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x00000124 (0x0000000000000000, 0xffffe000042c3028, 0x00000000bf800000, 0x0000000000000124).

Blue Screen View says: hal.dll+35cdf and ntoskrnl.exe+1b7d41

I turned Intel Turbo off in the BIOS to set my clock down to stock 3.5.
In EZ mode it says my RAM is at 1600MHz. That is what it is tested at, but according to http://www.corsair.com/us/memory-by-product-family/vengeance/vengeance-16gb-dual-channel-ddr3-memory... the spd speed is 1333.

Should I manually turn it down to 1333 or enable XMP?

I'm really at a loss right now. I've reinstalled Windows 6 times, not going to do it again. My MB is at the current BIOS version and I downloaded and installed all the new drivers for the chipset, LAN, etc.

The hal.dll+35cdf is usually some kind of memory error. Try setting your RAM up manually.

I ran memtest all night with no errors. So should I enable XMP? The default XMP profile loads my correct TESTED settings (1.5v, 10-10-10-27). I've been reading about how some people have had to up their voltage a little, say to 1.6 or 1.65. Anything in this might be applicable to me?

Also, based on the usual conditions that would cause me to crash in BF4 (ie. right after a death, end of round, other transition, etc), lead me to believe that it was either the RAM or the graphics cards. So for now I disabled SLI. I received my NVidia 3D Vision kit last night and BSOD'd while trying to play BF3 a couple times. Since I turned SLI off, I haven't BSOD'd.

I read a recommendation somewhere that a guy said the following: "if you had your SLI bridge connected when you first booted your computer and installed the NVidia drivers, you should uninstall the drivers, take the SLI bridge off, reboot, install the NVidia drivers, turn off the computer, install the SLI bridge again, then reboot." Well I did in fact have the SLI bridge on during the driver installation. Does anyone know if this has merit?

Since your pc does not BSOD with one card installed, you could try this, Leave the SLI bridge on, reinstall the NVidia drivers using the custom install and select perform a clean installation. After that is done go to NVidia control panel and maximize 3d performance. Start up battlefield 4 and see if you are still getting BSOD. I'm not guarantteing a fix but it is something simple to try first. If you passed memtest leave your RAM as is for now.
