bios 1405

couple of issues with my new build. I just recently noticed sometimes upon cold boot my system hangs, all fans power on but not video output and no boot. I have to press and hold the power button to power it down. Red light is solid under the CPU.

on next boot up it says overclock failed, press f1 to continue.

the 2nd issue I have is I noticed that sometimes when I shutdown my computer from windows 7 64bit it restarts.

everything has been fine for a few weeks of use. Only bios changes I have changed recently was disabling the asus gui from auto to disabled and shortening the post boot delay from 5seconds default to 1second. I also enabled hardware speed boot but changed this back.

I also went back in and ensured the XMP memory profile for the crucial tactical memory memory was set to XMP profile 1 "1.35v" after I noticed it had been automatically changed to disabled. I hit save and booted back into the bios to make sure the settings stuck. Guess what, the XMP profile 1 reverted back to disabled again. So I changed it a 2nd time to enable and hit save. This time the settings took.

Any ideas what is going on?

ps. wanted to add, once in windows and booted, everything is stable no lockups or problems.

Got home today and system powered up just fine. Then I was able to shut it down on the next reboot just fine.

Next I tried to power up the system again. System hangs and will not boot, no video output at all. Red light is on below cpu. I have to press and hold power button to shutdown the system. The next time I power can boot but get overclock failed message press f1 to continue into setup.

So at this point I place the clear cmos jumper and press power button.

Next I move jumper back and boot into setup. I load optimize defaults and xmp profile #1. Save and restart into windows. AISUITE starts in extreme mode/performance.

Next I shut back down and check ai tuner settings in bios. It appears they have changed from before I went into windows. specifically cpu core ratio changed from auto to per core and I think AI tuner changed from AS IS to ratio first. I swiched back the per core to auto and saved. So I'm assuming the aisuite from windows loaded some settings that's why the bios changed. Wonder if AIsuite is responsible for the hanging boots in the first place. anway moving on...

Next rebooted back into windows. I Noticed when I shutdown now the computer reboots. Or in some cases on shutdown appears to sleep with solid light on power button but no power.

Did some more research on system rebooting on shutdown and heard about a bug in the intel rst software driver 12.7 that causes this. So I removed intel rst software and now I was able to shutdown 10 times in a row from windows without it rebooting. I've also been able to startup 10 times or more without the red light coming on or hanging.

So now the only remaining problem or "maybe it's solved" is the failure to cold boot issue. (

Im wondering if some setting in aisuite is changing simething in the bios that causes the failure. Looks like my aisuite now has changed from extreme mode to standard after I told it to tweak Cores from per core to auto in the bios.

Please use the AISuite removal tool as per the guide and uninstall AISuite for now.

Then once you are done doing that get hold of a FAT formatted USB stick and flash your bios using the EZflash2 utility found in the tools menu of the bios. Download the latest bios from your motherboard product support page and place the bios file into the root director of the fat formatted usb stick.

The system may take some time to do the bios flash and then do a firmware update if it is needed, do not power off the system until it is done, you will know it is done when your system idles with the bios menu open.

Leave all on AUTO in the bios (set RAID as mode of SATA if you have a raid of course)

Boot into OS

Power down and see if the original problem is done. This should also resolve the XMP profile not being stuck when selected. Ensure you press F10 and enter after any bios changes that have been made.

done, still experiencing the problem with the red cpu light on cold boot even with no overclocking. once the red light is on the reset botton will not work. you have to hold and press the power button to do a hard power off. Then power back on and its fine. It seems to happen when its really cold which makes me tthink it might be a bad motherboard, cpu or memory. How would I know if its the board, cpu or RAM?

all I get is a solid RED CPU light no lights on the dram slots. The frustrating thing is it only happens about every few days on a cold boot.

My ram is 1.35v so I changed the profile to 1.5V, think that would make a difference? The 30 day window is running out today at the store.

If you have the option to send all the stuff back and get it replaced I would certainly ask them to test each component.

I am not a fan of 1.35 ram voltage, but I am biased I guess.

They replaced board and cpu. New board came with bios 809. Seems good so far, in thinking I will run with 809 for a few days then upgrade to 1405 only after I verify things are stable at 805

If your system is stable with the 809 BIOS, do not update it. You should never update the BIOS unless experiencing stability problems that only an updated BIOS can solve. Other than that if it ain't broken, don't fix it. 😉

Well there is something id like fixed. There is no xmp profile for me ti select from the ez-mode screen. It's odd that I can't even find that bios 809 under the z87-a downloads. It starts at 1007 first release bios.

Switch to Advanced mode and look for the AI Tweaker option to switch on XMP.

What is the exact model of your RAM?

I can not even see if the memory has a XMP profile to be honest. The web site for crucial does not say much.
