Asus Maximus VII Ranger not detecting SATA DVD-drive on every boot + other issues

Hi,

I bought this mobo and Intel I7 4790K just a couple days ago. I've had issues with it from the start.
Both the BIOS and Windows 8 are sometimes detecting the internal DVD drive, sometimes not. On top of that, I've had issues with updating windows, and after upgdrading to Windows 8.1 the ASUS AI suite II started giving me memory access violation errors and my ethernet drivers stopped working. Even reinstalling the drivers from the DVD did not help. I had to manually install the drivers using device manager.

The most annoying thing is the DVD-drive issue. You never know if the drive is going to be detected or not. It is just random.

If anyone has a fix to this, please I need your help. The customer service from where I bought these is very unhelpful.

I have:

ASUS MAXIMUS VII Ranger
Intel i7 4790K
Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit
ASUS GTX 770 Direct CUII
Kingston KHX1600C9D3/4GX 8GB kit
Corsair GS800 PSU
OCZ Vertex3 128GB SSD

Hi fubla,

Please follow the below procedure. I had the same issue and it is something to do with upper & lower filters in windows. You can google "Upperfilter & Lowerfilter optical drive", this will give you some info.

Click StartStart button, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit in the Programs list.

User Account Control permission If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue.
Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
2684263Warning There can be many instances of the registry subkey that is mentioned in step 2. You must make sure that you are in the appropriate registry subkey before you change the UpperFilters and the LowerFilters values. To verify that you are in the appropriate registry subkey, make sure that the Default value is DVD/CD-ROM and the Class value is CDROM.
If you see UpperFilters in the pane on the right side, right-click UpperFilters, and then click Delete.
Click Yes to confirm the removal of the UpperFilters registry entry.
If you see LowerFilters in the pane on the right side, right-click LowerFilters, and then click Delete.
Click Yes to confirm the removal of the LowerFilters registry entry.
Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.
