Asus MAXIMUS VI FORUMULA question

Hi, I have a couple questions regarding the ASUS MAXIMUS VI FORUMULA, and cpu cooling. I would like to know if a CoolerMaster v8 CPU cooler will fit on this board, or if the backplate is in the way.

Also, I realize this is an ASUS board, but I was hoping someone here could also answer these questions as well..
1. I've read that 1155 socket CPU coolers have the same alignment as the newer 1150, can anyone confirm this?
2. Given that the v8 cooler will actually fit in this board, will CORSAIR Vengeance Pro (2x4GB) be able to fit under the cooler?
3. I actually can't seem to find the Cooler Master v8 on any online retail stores... Was it discontinued for some reason? (I realize it is from around 2008 :p) If it is no longer made, I'll try scouting around Ebay for one. I really like the aesthetics of the cooler.

If your case has the motherboard tray cutout then the backplate shouldn't be an issue

Yes the 1155 and 1150 share the same hole setup for mounting

As for your ram, you can Google for ppl with that motherboard cooler combo to see if there are any height issues, but if the memory is low profile which many companies carry now you may be good but I'd still search a lot first before buying

As for availability of the V8 I'm not really sure, I know the hyper 212 should still be available and is listed as being pretty good as well as the noctua one which I can't remember the number cause they have a 120mm and a 140mm version, but again with any of these you'll need to check the height and any restrictions


If you'd like to totally skip any height issues you can go with an all in one cooler solution like a corsair h100, h105, h110 or swiftech depending on where your located, but then you'd need to make sure u have room for the radiator mounting, all and all tho an all in one technically will cost less then custom water cooling but should perform better then a stock air cooler while also not hindering any space

I am considering the h110i. The case I am planning to get (CM Storm Stryker/Trooper) should have plenty of room to fit it. Thanks for the reply.

No problem, my only suggestion is the I type coolers have corsair link, that will make your windows crash if installed with ai suite, so it be better for ya to decide first if that's the cooler you want which program your not going to install

Or you can go with a non I cooler like the H105 or H110, they both have bigger rads so you'd again need to be sure it would fit fine, but technically bigger rad should equal better cooling and they also don't have corsair link

Another thing if I recall correctly the h100i requires a USB header which the formula only has 2 of so if your case has more then 1 set of USB 2.0 on the front one of those would need to be not connected or you'd maybe need something like the nzxt IU01, in the beginning of my build I was looking at a 100i and saw I'd need that adaptor to make use of all my USB ports and the cooler but I decided against it just for less possible issues


I settled on the Swiftech H320 for myself, should fit in my case without issues but I'm prepared to possibly have to take a dremal to my case if need be to make it fit lol

Yeah, I've read somewhere that software overclocking isn't that great, so knowing it will also crash with Link is good info.. When I decide to take a go at overclocking, I guess I'll have to check some guides for the BIOS way. Hope your case works out for you 😛

Well even if your not over clocking, just having Asus software installed with the corsair link software will cause windows issues, that's what Iwas saying about choosing, most here usually recommend manual over clock and third party monitors like hw monitor, so if that's the route your going to go your should be able to use corsair link with out issue as long as u totally skip installing ai suite

If you plan on no over clocking at all then you can install an suite just as a monitor but then again you'd need to remember that aisuite also won't properly work with other monitors, u can use ai suite and gpu-z, but if you were to say install cpu-z it would conflict and cause one to show false data


Thx for the wishes on my case lol according to cooler master my case supports 360mm rads so I should have no issue but since the rad has built in res and adjustable tubing its almost 400mm so its gonna fit lol just if I need to alter the back of the case or not lol since its a half 932 with optional top or bottom power supply and I have it down bottom, I can easily remove the other plate and make it an opening

Hey, back with another quick question...

Is the MSI GeForce GTX 770 2GB going to cause any problems with the Asus Maximus VI Formula? I was going to go for the Asus 770 first, but then I came across the MSI. The MSI has a little bit better core clock speed, and I prefer the looks of the card more than the Asus 770.

And would installing MSI software eliminate the problem between the Corsair Link and the Asus software?

no the card maker shouldnt matter, asus, msi, evga, pny

only thing youd need to check is does your case support the size of the card whatever it may be, or will it hit something like a HDD tray or anything like that

about the software no, if ai suite and corsair link are both installed windows will have issues at one point or another, nothing except removing one of the programs will stop it

but if your planing on doing any overclocking and your also planning on using the bios to do it then you dont need ai suite installed at all u can then run the corsair link and ur msi software for the card and have all overclock settings in bios wether it be cpu or ram overclocks

also nice choice on card lol im looking into getting a 770 myself for my formula VI, was thinking of a R9 290x till i saw the 600-700 price tag, then i couldnt stop laughing at it, then i saw probly 4 reviews now about the MSI lighting 290x and that its been trashing all other cards and was like hmmm, then i saw that isnt even out yet and the current retail on it is set to be 800 lol

I've also been looking even further into different parts. When I was first planning out this build, I was going to go with the 780. Then while adding other parts and noticing the price sky rocket :p, I opted for the 770. I've read benchmark tests and, as expected, the 780 is quite a bit better. Now I'm starting to think saving up just a little longer to get the 780 will be worth it in the long run. Also, I might not be going with the H110 either. I'm thinking of going with the Swiftech H220 instead. Do you (or anyone else) have any knowledge with that particular cooler?

BTW - this is my part list as of now. I would appreciate any feedback.

as for the card 770 or 780 both be good, i was simply saying that the newer AMD card are way to overpriced, in all the benchmarks i saw the 290x was clearly better then the 770 but in a few areas they were very very close, and the fact that you could buy 2 770's and sli them which would then be neck and neck if not beating the 290x and still have saved money over buying 1 290x is just plain wild lol also i cant recall correctly but i believe the 780 is a dual gpu which the 770 i believe is not and would explain any bigger margins you saw in benchmarks, thats also the difference between Quad SLI and 4-Way SLI incase youd like that tid bit of info as well(4-way SLI is 4 actual cards, Quad SLI is 2 actualy cards that each have 2 GPU's on them) lol our board supports 2-way SLI, 2 or 3 way crossfire and Quad SLI only, no 4 way here, as well as the fact that 2 way sli or quad sli will shut off the other pci x16 lanes or atleast knock them to be electrically x1's, also dont recall 100% if this board has the feature to knock it to x1 so it may just shut them off

as for the cooler, i actually have ordered a H320 as we speak its being shipped to me

the way i view it is Swiftech is actually a water cooling company, they moved into the all in one loops as everyone else did, only difference is the swiftech h220 and h320 can be expanded, while i wouldnt go as far as swiftech did in there demo you could easily throw a gpu into the loop

swiftechs demo, they started with a h220, added a second rad, added a VRM and Chipset block, and added 2 video cards in and the h220's pump had no issues running it all

all the other companies, Corsair, NZXT, Coolermaster none can be expanded without modification and there all made by the same company, Asetek, they all have different design to them but Asetek makes them all, there also the reason swiftech cant be sold in america anymore due to a lawsuit, which is also rumored that swiftech has an all new all in one design coming out sometime this or next year that they say will put all other to shame and itll be allowed in the us stores again
