Asus Maximus V Formula with i7 3770K max multiplier 37 after waking up from standby

Hi all

I have the following system

ASUS Maximus V Formula running latest bios 1408
i7 3770K
2x8Gb G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series DDR3 1600 F3-1600C9D-16GXM
GIGABYTE GV-N670OC-2GD GeForce GTX 670 2GB
Seasonic X-850 850W ATX12V 80Plus Gold certified
Samsung 830 SSD 256Gb
Western Digital Caviar Black 2Tb
Onboard audio

CPU cooling with Antec Kuhler 920
Case cooling with 4x120mm fans (NZXT Switch 810 case)

Running Windows 7 64-bit, fully updated as of approx 2 weeks ago

Latest chipset drivers from the ASUS website

Idle CPU temp (package temp) 25-30 degrees, load stabilises around 45 degrees. Individual core temps stabilise on load between 57 and 62 degrees

The only "overclock" setting I have is to set the XMP memory profile, which sets the turbo boost on but sets the cores to auto

I haven't fiddled with any other voltage/clock settings

Only other settings I have changed are disabling unused onboard devices, and changed some fan profiles

Everything is hunky dory, with the multiplier varying between 16x and 39x based on CPU load leading to speeds of 1600MHz to 3900MHz. Bios reports target speed as 3900MHz.

However consistently after waking up from standby, the peak multiplier becomes 37x even on full load using Prime95. So I get a range of speeds from 1600MHz to 3700MHz.

I have tried changing Internal PLL Overvoltage from auto to disabled, as I read this might cause sleep problems, but no help.

I have tried with and without turboboost enabled (Asus AI Suite II) but the same happens.

Even with Asus AI Suite II completely uninstalled the same behaviour occurs.

I will continue to try to change other settings but was hoping that people could guide me with this.

Thanks for your help!

Hello

When your system is using a single core then the multiplier will be 39x when you are using more than 1 core then your Turbo mode will not be at 39 but will adjust depending on how many cores are being used. The fact you get 37x when running prime is quite surprising. That suggests to me you still have some left overs from your AIsuite install.

Try running a single worker or a single threaded application and see if you get the full 39x Turbo ratio.

Thanks for the reply
Even running single threaded results in the same behaviour
I found the fix, quite simple (and silly really)
I just needed to change the "auto" setting of the turbo multiplier in bios to the maximum I want (ie 39x) and now it's all working
Funny how writing a big long paragraph can find the solution
Thanks for your help!

LOL actually not that strange, some researchers have speculated that it is the process of speaking the problem out loud or in your case writing it down that helps find t he solution. So when folks are working out stuff and they mumble to them self what they are doing is jogging the thinking process. The act of outward expression means the brain deals with the problem like it is seeing it for the first time. And since the brain works as a pattern completion mechanism it tries finding a solution. Independent of when you have the problem in your head and can not work it out.

So I guess there is some sense to women wanting to just have men listen to them when they have stuff going on and need to talk 😄

HAHAHAHAHAHAAA

Actually that last part was from my wife she was standing behind me when I was going off on a tangent. 😄

hehehe...same happened to me reading that paragraph of HiViz's.....had a mental image of generations of great thinkers talking to themselves while revolutionizing science etc........then read that last bit and heard that stylus-scratching-record sound

That's the key difference.....I have no need for anyone else to hear me mumbling things to myself....the lassies need to subject someone else to the mumbling.

Indeed that is the difference. Arne you are a philosopher of note.

It's funny I'm having the exact same problem. I have the MVF and a 3770k not over clocked yet, which by default fluctuates between x16 and x39 (normal) before it goes to sleep. After I wake it up it hits a max multiplier of x37 only according to cpuz. . Even if the bios is set to auto it should be hitting x39 by default. Is this a bug? It seems that way.

How did you flash your bios, and what version bios are you using?
