5ghz 8700k overclock reports in CPU-Z as 4.2?

Hi all,

I've a problem that I don't know how to address. I've an 8700k say inside a Maximus Hero X and I followed the overclocking guides specifically for this combo to go to 5Ghz and when I look at CPU-Z and my task manager I'm running at 4.2Ghz.

I've tried different multipliers above x42 and there's no difference, it's also delidded. and I've tried to avoid looking dumb by searching for the same problem but I can't see it.

I'm on the latest bios too.

Hmm, yeah I'm a little stumped myself.

How about the slow mode switch, normally if it's set to ON the cpu will stick at 800MHz but check to see it's set to OFF.

Did this just start happening or was it like this from the start ?

Are you using AI Suite ?

I just checked and the slo mo switch is off. This is the first attempt at overclocking since building the rig in January.

It's confusing because I've clocked lots of ASUS rigs before, 5960x, 3930k builds no problem. I also tried using AI Suite and the 5 way optimisation threw a bit of a wobbly. You know where you get it to optimise the rig and it goes through the multipliers to stress test 3, then 6 cores? Mine kept on going up to x70 (7ghz) at that point I decided it was getting silly and stopped it.

When the pc restarted it crashed on the Windows logo. I reset everything. But if I load AI Suite 3 the cores are all at 50. I dont understand where it's getting this 4.2Ghz from. It's not the turbo speed or any set limit (3.7 or 4.7).

Could it be cpuz detecting incorrectly? Try HWiNFO or hwmonitor.

Sadly I'm still getting the same. Could this be either a bad delid? Or a motherboard issue? I'll know for sure by Tuesday as I'll have another 8700k to compared it to (Retail, no delid)

Just a shot in the dark, would you by chance have Real Temp installed ?

If so, open it and click settings, make sure Disable Turbo is unchecked.

If not, try uninstalling AI Suite.

No real temp installed.

I can't test a chip swap until tomorow where I'll report back. But what I have done today is pulled the chip, removed the lid, cleaned and checked the ic and transistors. Removed the nail varnish from the three points, removed the liquid metal, replaced with a different (non conductive) tim and replaced without resticking the lid to the IC.

Also tried pulling some ram and it's still reporting eactly the same. It's either the board or the chip. It'll surprise me if it's the IC as I'd expect it to either not work at all or work as expected.

Update. I have 5Ghz.



I had a spare SSD with windows installed, used that to boot with and it's reporting AOK. Now, finding WHY my main OS is reporting something else.

It seems it was something with windows holding the cpu at 4.2GHz.

Same deal with my wife's pc too. In both cases these were updated from windows 7 and the same drives moved to new hardware.

This might be it. Now to try and fix this without reinstalling windows on two machines....

One thing you can check is the advanced settings in the power options.

Open the windows power options then click "change advanced power settings", click processor power management, check the Maximum and Minimum processor state.

In manual/high performance mode both are set to 100%.
