5 way will not overclock after ram removal - need some advice please.

With my Rampage Extreme I was clocking my 5930k at a comfortable 4.4 - today I had ram errors so found the guilty stick and removed it. Problem is I need pairs so had to remove two sticks leaving just two at 8 rather than 16. Went to again overclock my cpu and 5 way tries but bios says no,,,no to any overclock even 4.

Is this correct? I plan on getting four new sticks of ram to go back to 16 but I did not realize having only 8 would stop me from overclocking the cpu.

Have you removed one kit? and left the other....check the serial numbers on the sticks to make sure the two sticks left are from the same original kit...not one stick from each kit as it were.....

Then clear CMOS and start to OC from scratch

Thanks very much for the reply. This was a complete four pack matched kit and I removed two as it needs pairs so one bad but two had to go. Left with just two 5 way seems to not like it.

To clear the CMOS what is the procedure for the Rampage Extreme. I think I read somewhere there was a CMOS button ?

So you have a new quad channel kit right? and still got problems?

Can you tell me which one exactly?

To clear CMOS remove power to board...wait until lights go out and press clear CMOS button on I/O panel (has a green circular arrow)

does the quad channel kit work at F5 defaults? does it work at XMP? no other OCing?

Does the kit have a bad stick? you sure? I ask because you have a lot of RAM problems and it might be down to badly seated CPU or even a bad mother board.

Test one stick in each red slot and see if it is a problem with one slot rather that one stick...test a couple of sticks so you are sure it is not a bad stick...just work through sticks and slots methodically at F5 defaults.

Thanks, it is a year old matched set and after windows ram errors occurred I removed and tested the ram and found one bad module. I will reset the CMOS and see what happens or maybe I should just wait until I decide on a new set of ram to replace.

OK roger that.....bit of bad luck...

G.Skill Ripjaws 4 works a treat on these boards.....3000MHz cas 15 for 16GB 2400MHz for 32GB that sort of thing

Depends a lot on quality of CPU memory controller what you can run. In general for higher GB kits drop MHz a bit for smaller GB kits maybe 3000 or 3200 will work...

I have a 16GB kit overclocked from 3000 to 3200 for example.....

Ripjaws 5 kits work for some people but not for all....they are more Z170 oriented...
