4930K First Time Overclocker 4.7Ghz Am I doing this right?

Hi Forum

Just recently built my first desktop PC and experiencing my first time overclocking.
My setup is:
Intel i7 4930K
Asus Rampage IV Black Edition
2x 8GB Corsair Dominator Platinum 2400MHz 10-12-12-31 1.65V
Corsair H110 for CPU cooling

I've been playing around with the bios overclocking tools and AI SUITE 3 using AIDA64 for stress testing.
My first stable run was at 4.7Ghz with multiplier of 47 on all cores and a CPU VCORE of 1.385V resulting in a core voltage of 1.420V for AI SUITE 3 and 1.408V for CPU-Z. Memory is in XMP mode and running at 2400MHz. A CPU VCORE of 1.380V resulted in an unstable system in 30 mins. Running AIDA64 I maintained a stable system for around 7 hours with CPU temps between 40-50 degrees Celsius and my individual core temps between 70-80 degrees Celsius.

The questions I pose are:
1. Is this a good oc?
2. Is the voltage too high and should I go for a lower multiplier and CPU VCORE?
3. What would the life expectancy of this chip be at these settings?
4. Should CPU VCORE always be at 1.408V even when not under load and if so is there anyway to drop the voltage in idle use?

Any responses will be appreciated and helpful
Thanks

Somehow its not working properly for me. 😞 I loaded the defaults, turned off cpu level up, activated xmp, checked settings from memory which i found on manufacturers website (http://www.corsair.com/en-us/dominator-platinum-with-corsair-link-connector-1-5v-32-gb-dual-channel-...) and set the multipier to 45 and VCore to 1.40

AIDA ran for 1:30 mins and then system just froze. Do i have to deactivate additional settings in the bios like Speedstep or turbo ?

I didnt change any settings for the memory cause of what i have read on the hompage and what was shown in the bios looked the same to me. Maybe it wasn´t the correct link i was looking at.

Some other strange thing is, when the program CoreTemp is loaded, manually or at startup doesnt matter, the whole system freezes for a moment and task manager (if i was fast enough starting it) showed CPU at 100% load.
Never had that behaviour with my old system before.

Additionally i have to mention that i changed HW without reinstalling my OS. Everything went fine after changing HW, Just had to install two additional drivers. So i the problem shouldn´t be my Windows due to the fact that its running stable with 4.0 GHz.

Thx again for any help.

The only preset i used was the xmp profile for the memory if you mean that. I did everything like altair told me to do.
I am using a corsair h90 water cooling kit.

OK, try this: Go into the bios and hit F5 to set defaults. Go to extreme tweaker tab and set the ai overclock tuner to manual, sync all cores and set the cpu core ratio to 42 and the cpu core voltage (vcore) to 1.25v., F10 and enter. Now run a stress test with aida64 or prime95 for 3 minutes monitoring temps with real temp 3.70 or Hwmonitor. Temperature controls how far you will be able to overclock. Are you stable with these settings and what are your cpu temps?

We'll get you stable with your cpu first then we will set your ram.

Ok thx, will try immediately. Just made some Screenshots so you guys can see what i did with altairs step by step guide. 39556395573955839559395603956139562395633956439565

Thanks for posting the screenshots. It looks like your vcore voltage did not take as it is 1.152v.

1.40v might be a bit much for the h90 to handle, try the settings I suggested then we can raise the cpu core ratio until there is instability. Please post your cpu temps.

Ah sorry, no i didnt accept the changes. Just did that without saving it to show you guys. the Vcore is from my actual stable setting with a multiplier of 40.

AIDA is running for 12 minutes now...max core temp 66 c so far. How long should the stresstest last ? 1 hour ?

No, I run it for just 3 minutes. Your temp is excellent and says we can add more voltage. Go back into the bios and set the cpu vcore voltage to 1.30v and raise the cpu core ratio to 44. Run the test again for 3 minutes monitoring your cpu temps. Post your temps again please. We don't want to see anything over 90c when stress testing.

Done...max core temp from one core was 71c, rest was between 63c and 67c
