4820K OC help

Hello, first thread here (didn't have much luck on overclock.net)

so i need some help overclocking my i7 4820K.
it's an Ivy-E CPU with a 2011 socket, meaning it only works with the X79 chipset. it runs at 3.7GHz stock, 3.9 Boost.

Specs:
Mobo: R4BE
RAM: 4x 8GB G.Skill RipjawZ 2400MHz CL10
PSU: AX1200i
Cooling: EKFB R4BE monoblock

it runs completely stable at 4.5GHz at 1.2Vcore and LLC at high, as far as i can tell.

4.8GHz won't boot at 1.3Vcore, but i can get into windows at 1.35Vcore with CLL at Ultra, but Intel Burn Test fails after 2-3 passes.

i think i need to change some other voltages like VCCSA, VTT, PLL etc. but i have little idea what these voltages will do.

also, i'm not sure what RAM settings i need; i've just been running them at ~1000MHz when OC'ing.

is it safe to change CPU strap/ will it help get a stable OC?

will it help using quad channel memory, over dual channel?

is it recommended to use XMP?

i'm hoping to be able to do some benchmarks at 5.0GHz, but getting 4.8 stable is fine for now.

Btw. at 4.5GHz temp is at ~50C during stress testing.

at 4.8GHz with RAM at 2400MHz i get a BSOD code 50.

i don't get the BSOD with RAM at 1333, but same code again if i try to lower the RAM voltage.

at 4.9GHz, 1.45 Vcore i can get into windows, but IBT fails after 2 passes.

but the 4.8/4.9 speed (Gflops) is lower than at 4.1, wich i don't understand?

i fixed the BSOD with VCCSA at 1.20. still haven't figured out how to get the RAM running at 1.5V

I managed to get 4.7GHz stable at 1.34 Vcore, with VTT at 1.225 and CPU fixed frequency at 800.
LLC at High giving 1.344 pretty consistantly.

Wow that's awesome you got 5.0GHz ! Your voltage looks a bit high but to pass the intel burn test I guess that's what it needed. Adding another 480 rad seemed to helped a lot to be able to run that kind of voltage. 🙂

I'm at 5.0GHz too, only mine is just game stable, I feel sure it would need a little more voltage to pass a stress test.

yeah, the Vcore is way up there, that's why i waited untill i had bought an overclocking warrenty plan.

to be honest i seriously doubt the ekstra rad helped that much.
but the temps are definitly starting to be a problem.

maybe if i ran LLC at max i mightbe able to bring it down 0.3-0.5... it did that at 4.5GHz

but it's far from stable, only passes 2 passes of IBT.
anyway, it was only for the CPU-Z validation.

Outstanding and a big Hi - 5 from me !

Yeah play with the LLC and see if that let's you get the voltage down some.

At 5.0GHz that will help put out the frames per second, with a little know how and a good cpu, ROG motherboards rock !

yes, and I'm not worried about the VRM as it is under water.

but i'm got gonna play too mught with Vcore over 1.4.
I'm saving that for when the warrenty runs out (or about to, *evil smirk*), and i get bored.

I think I'll de-lid the SOB when the warrenty runs out, because the temps are bothering me (93C on hottest core) 😕

but i think my GPU will be maxed out before my CPU. 4.5GHz is fine for now.

Also, i can run my GPU up to 1300MHz. Past that there are way too many artifacts.
odd thing is that adding more voltage didn't seem to help at all 😕

But yeah, ROG board is definitly the best.
when i bought it I didn't know half the features that have come in handy.

That's 93c on the Intel burn test, I bet your gaming temps are probably 70c or a little lower which is fine.

Nvidia has the voltage locked, no matter what you set it to it won't go any higher than what it's locked at, mine are locked at 1.175v. The only way to raise the voltage is with a vbios mod and I don't recommend doing that.

1300MHz is pretty good on the core I can only get 1241MHz out of mine.

I know, and it might read 5C too much. i could also limit the current capability, but that would defeaf the purpose.

i know the voltage is locked, and it sucks, but i didn't see an improvement from 1150mV (lowest) to 1203 (Max)

yes it's not too shabby, but you also have a 680, so i wouldn't complain 😉

On a sidenote:
when using offset, I'm trying to use the Turbo boost additional voltage, when running over the stock 37 multiplier, so that i can run lower offset.
but the Turbo voltage never kicks in? kinda frustrating...

I have found a custom bios for the GPU, but i won't risk bricking it.

also i have had random chrashes.
it happens about once a month, where the screen just go black and the audio disapears. no BSOD just black and freeze.
it's not even when running games or anything demanding. totally random.

It might be best to reset to defaults, run it for a bit and see if you still get crashes. It's probably instability somewhere with your ram, cpu or gpu.

You have plenty of power so I don't think it's your psu, do you have the 4 pin cpu power cable connected? It's not mandatory but when overclocking extreme you want to have it connected.

You could reset the bios to defaults and enable xmp and run it like that for a while to see if it's a ram issue, if it seems ok then your cpu or gpu overclock is unstable.

GPU runs at stock normally, RAM at rated specs.
i run my CPU at 4.1GHZ for 24/7,and it has passed 12hourson prime95...
and i have run Memtest86 at 4.5GHZ without any errors.

yeah, shouldn't be my PSU. that thing is Platinum and got all the protection features you can imagine.
I run with 8+4 pin 24/7

I think i reset my bios when i created the current profile...
