4770k + Maximus VI Formula + 16gb 1866mhz = BSOD??!! Help ?

Hi all,

I recently build a new pc:

Intel i7 4770k @ 3,9 ghz (boosted by mb) + Corsair H100i
Asus Maximus Vi Formula
4x4gb Corsair XMP 1866mhz
Gigabyte GTX 780 OC
Samsung EVO 250gb
Corsair 750 watts modulair

I installed all drivers correctly, all from the Asus website.

My main problem is crashing, especially in videogames like Battlefield 4, or even CounterStrike Source.
I got several BSOD's, mostly MEMORY_MANAGEMENT related.

When I run a stability test with Aida64, I get a hardware failure.
I ran a memtest overnight, with 6 passes and no errors.

My bios is up to date (version 1402), and I am running optimized default settings ( only XMP for the Dimms is enabled )

I tried literally everything I could think off. I didn't mess with any voltages because my knowledge of the motherboard doesn't suffice.

Is there anyone out there willing to help me out?
I am willing to provide any information/dump files/..

Greetings from Belgium!

Hi Jordy 🙂

Can you tell me a bit more about your memory. Is that one single kit or two kits and which kit(s) exactly. Have you tried running the system with only one stick at a time to see if one is dodgy?

Maybe reseat the RAM to make sure it is 100% firmly seated.

Do you have the 24pin and 8pin power connectors fully populated and have you checked the connections to make sure they are seated well...that the pins in the connectors are in the right place etc.

is that a fresh clean install of the OS? is the SSD firmware up to date?

- hello my friend ... i've had same problem since i have almost same setup and problem was RAM

- i've kept old ram Corsair Vengeance RED (regular) made for X58 and all the way up to Ivy ... but Haswell and Z87 asks for newer memory products ... first, i could not believe in this, but i've ordered Corsair Vengeance PRO, and eveything worked very well (and still is) ... also old memory is working fine, but on older rigs so i had to sold those modules

- if you can, try to borrow from someone some RAM modules just for testing and you MUST reset your CPU on factory settings until you settle all up

- and here's my rig so you can see it (almost the same like yours Maximus VI Formula and i7-4770K ...)

Thanks all for looking into my problem.

To answer questions above:

- It's one kit 4x4gb

- Everything was seated perfectly

- SSD had a recent firmware update, and I did a fresh install of windows 8 pro retail

I ran a memtest+ this night and had 88 errors.

Today my 2x8gb 2400mhz Corsair Vengeance Pro arrived, and after 30mins of stresstesting, still no hardware failure or bsod.

Could this be the solution ? 🙂

One further question:
Currently my 4770k is running at 3900mhz, boosted bij the MB.
But this is constant 3.9ghz, it doesnt drop.
Temps are around 30 degrees celcius idle.
Is this normal ?
Or should I manually OC the cpu ? Or not OC at all?

BTW: nice gaming rig! Looks a lot like mine, but I think your GPU is better 😄
Asus matrix? Which one?

- well, as I said, looks like your problem is exactly like mine was ... RAM (!) ... obviously it is RAM, but do not stress it, just run some app's, games, let it work for a few hours and you'll see

- temp for CPU is perfect

- GPU ? well, i have only one word - BRILLIANT 🙂 .. it is ASUS ROG MATRIX GTX 780Ti Platinum ... one for now, and i'm planning one more for SLI in next 2 months

- i'm glad if everything is working fine now

I quit the stress test after the 30 mins.
I will try playing some games, but I'm still a afraid to see the BSOD again 😄 Haha!

Do you have a stable overclock for your 4770k? Or do you use the turbo mode as well?
I would like the best settings for my MB and CPU.

And wow man, Asus Matrix GTX 780 Ti, that's the real deal !
You're making me jealous, haha 😄

Yep definitely RAM...you need to send that kit back for a refund or replace...

The constant 3.9GHz I suspect something like your SSD optimizer or yourself has set performance power plan?....nothing wrong with that but it sets "minimum processor state" to 100% in advanced options for the power plan. navigate there and set 10% and you should see load and voltage drop together...all the benefits of speedstep...

I am defenitly gonna RMA the memory.
Weird thing is, I bought this kit new, so I just had bad luck with one of the dimms I guess?

Anyway, problem seems to be solved with the new RAM.

Can I expect a performance boost with these 2400mhz dimms?
Or won't I notice the difference ?

Depends a bit...for normal day to day computing or even most gaming you wont notice a difference but if you ever run a benchmark, or encode video or transfer large amounts of data then yes you would get higher scores or lower finishing times that sort of thing. No harm in having fast RAM!

Just one thought...I wonder if you might try each of the sticks from that 4x4 kit...one at a time or a pair of them in the slots you have your current RAM in...what I'm getting at I guess is that maybe the problem could be slots on the board not RAM sticks....since you have substituted a 4x4 kit with 2x8 it might appear that the problem was RAM but hide the fact that the unused slots were the problem...if you know what I mean..

Could faulty ram slots cause memtest+ errors?
