1000watt psus for overclocking; Have rosewill rbr1000, but label seems misleading.

Hey Guys,

I'm new to ROG and recently started to put my rig together. I tried searching the forums about the RBR 1000, but couldn't find anything.
I recently purchased one for $109 (black Friday deal) and I seriously am desperate to alleviate my paranoia that I might contract buyers
remorse.

The PSU label says that the voltage range is 90v to 240v and the amperage is 13A.
I'm going off of what high school taught me here.
90v x 13a = 1117watts.
Then I take into account the efficiency of 80% and that number comes up 936watts.
Now considering Electronics Technician is not my profession, I'm certain there is more math involved.
If I am not mistaken the standard outlet in the US has a voltage output of 120v.

I just want to be able to put 3 video cards in my system in the future and overclock my CPU (fx 8350). I heard on standard closed loop systems with an over clock of 5.0 will claim close to 400 watts and the gtx 670 in triple does 433. Should I be in the clear for now. Or in the meantime invest in something with a platinum efficiency rating?

From what I know, for example, if you have something that requires 100W and you use a 80% PSU, it'll pull more than 100W from the wall. You should be in the clear, the PSUs on the market are actually rated lower than they can actually do. They rate it lower for safety, some people will try to push limits just to save money.

I had a friend who used a 800w PSU, OCed an i7 930 & GTX 480 SLI and was pulling about 970W from the wall. He used a kill-a-watt meter and I thought he was going to blow his PSU.

Efficiency is not a subtraction sum. It just means the PSU will deliver the rated power while it wastes the remaining percentage as noise or heat. So your 80% efficient supply will deliver it's promised wattage but it will be drawing 20% more from the wall.

This. It's '120% inefficient' (depending on it's 80Plus rating)

Calculate real, usable wattage from the DC rail values.

Hyper M1000 eh? /echo's HiVis concerns

I was reading some reviews and the hiper m1000 and rbr1000 PSU seems mediocre, but not horrible. Several people had said the 12v ripple is passable, not outstanding. One reviewer said that the ripple was at maximum spec with 5 amps to go. So probably would just keep this one unit until I can replace it.
Meh, I see now why having 3 670s would be an iffy choice.

That PSU is basically the Hiper M1000 1kW just rebranded.

It will do the job, depending on what 3 video cards you want to use. Me I would not use it on three 670 cards.
To help us help you - please provide as much information about your system and the problem as possible.

Why wouldn't you use 3 670s with it?

IMO

I would also look into getting a decent UPS. 🙂

Anything specific you recommend? Im guessing voltage regulation is what I should look for.
