X99EWS - Can't move back to older BIOS's

Radox
Level 7
Hi there, got an issue which for the life of me cannot figure out.

Currently using the X99-EWS board (Not the 3.1 or 10G version) paired with a 5960x. Was initially planning to move to the 6950x so upgraded to the latest BIOS's which while for most the part works fine, but are not quiet as stable as my older 2009 bios at higher OC's that I used to run. While that is an issue I am now just trying to move back to any BIOS pre 3xxx, the ones that introduced Broadwell-E support.

Here are the most recent BIOS's

  • 3302
  • 3201
  • 3101
  • 3004 - Introduced Support for Broadwell-E
  • 2009 - My most stable BIOS with my 5960x
  • 1302
  • 1301 - Board came with this BIOS

Now basically I cannot for the life of me move back to 2009 BIOS or prior. I can move between any of the most recent four 3xxx BIOS's no issue however. Initially when I tried to upgrade via the EzFlash tool within the BIOS I get "Selected file is not a proper BIOS". Trying to flash the BIOS within Windows with EZ Update gives the message "The Model of the BIOS image does't match the BIOS ROM currently present". Naming is all correct of course as moving between others is fine and in the past it worked when I moved from 1301 to 1302 and eventually 2009 fine.

I thought regressing in a sequential order may help, but nope. I initially thought the ASUS link for the 2009 BIOS may be a tad dodgy, but that can't be the case if all prior BIOS's are not working. Right now thinking something introduced as part of a safety measure with broadwell-E support so you can't regress back to a non supporting BIOS may be at fault, but just an uneducated guess really.

Any help in to shedding some light as to what's going on would be great 🙂

Use BIOS Flashback method http://event.asus.com/2012/mb/USB_BIOS_Flashback_GUIDE/

Thanks You!!!! Am going mad, thought I tried that method, but gave it a shot after your suggestion and it worked first time. Did take about 20 mins oddly, but got their in the end.

Bad news my chip does not seem to like 4.6 Ghz + anymore which I assumed was down to the new BIOS. Seems to not be the case!

Thanks for the help 😮
