Windows Audio encountered an error while processing a device event

Hi, I have this motherboard with a FX-8150, Windows 7 64-bit with SP1 and I use its integrated audio for sound, with the most up-to date audio drivers. My sound speakers are only 2-speakers in-built on an asus lcd monitor via a simple 3.5 mm audio cable.

I am experiencing the whole system going mute, playing no sound for any application, be it a game, or web browsing, or just listening to music, but it happens at random, very difficult to track how it happens. I am not able to reproduce this issue to fool-proof this muting outcome, but I know that there are some applications that can trigger the muting issue more often than others.

I learned the other day how to investigate Windows' own event logs and I came accross the following:

Windows Audio encountered an error while processing a device event.
Event ID : 0x0x8004 (DBT_DEVICEREMOVECOMPLETE)
Failure Code : 0x0xE0000225

Sometimes it also logs a problem with Audiodg.exe event:
The Windows Audio Device Graph Isolation process (audiodg.exe) has terminated unexpectedly.
Process Exit Code: 0x0x80004005

The sound drivers are up to date as far I can say, I have installed these in order:
- 64bit_Vista_Win7_Win8_R271 - from realtek website
- SB_XFi2_V10_R11_VistaWin7 - from asus website

Once the system is mute, my best solution so far has been to restart Windows. My other not-so good solution was to stop and start all audio services I could find from the Windows Services list, but this one is not garanteed to always work.

May I suggest that you use the drivers only from the ASUS site. Not suggesting that the realtek drivers are the cause but the ASUS drives have been put together for ASUS hardware.

Remove the old stuff completely do not leave bits and bobs behind if possible.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I need a bit of guidance to get to the correct download. It is confusing why there's "AUDIO" and "Utilities" categories, one with the realtek drivers, the other with the XFi.

I'm doing like this:
Go to http://rog.asus.com/motherboard/formula/crosshair-v-formula/
Click Download tab
Select Windows 7 64bit

expand AUDIO - download http://support.asus.com.tw/download/download.aspx?model=Crosshair%20V%20Formula&f_name=Realtek_Audio...
expand Utilities - download http://support.asus.com.tw/download/download.aspx?model=Crosshair%20V%20Formula&f_name=SB_XFi2_V10_R...

Can you confirm I'm dowloading the right ones?

As long as you are downloading them from the ASUS site then yes. I read your OP to mean you went to the Realtek site...

Hi again, I have a small update regarding this topic.

I have not 'yet' resorted to install the sound drivers from ASUS website, but I've been having no issues ever since the time I first opened this topic - I've uninstalled that day Adobe Flash Player (uncertain about which version, but it was for IE10), and so far, 10 days and ongoing, I haven't had any sound issues whatsoever. Reading through Adobe website also seems to indicate there was some sort of sound problem within the same timeframe, April - June.

Unfortunately for me, that wasn't the only thing I have uninstalled that day. I've also uninstalled MSI Afterburner and HWiNFO which were both running at Windows start-up. I especially think the conflict is between the audio/video recording feature of MSI Afterburner which was always turned on for video capturing whenever I wanted, and Adobe Flash Player for whenever I wanted to watch some youtube video - something to do with microphone or audio capturing, and I know both applications (Afterburner and Flash) do resort to audio capturing devices.

Maybe I'm talking out of my ass and nobody's here to even care, but those are just my obvervations. I will be more aware next time I re-install these two programs, one at a time, then if I don't get into the same sound issues again, I will install the other one a week later.

I no longer believe it to be a driver issue anymore.

Flash does cause huge issues for many folks - HWinfo should not be a problem. Afterburner also, but I do not use any of the capturing side of AB.
