Two issues with new build using Maximus VII hero

Hi all,

I recently completed my first build of a pc and used an asus maximus vii motherboard. I have two issues I am trouble shooting that might be board related and I am 100% stumped.

Issue 1. Sometimes if I boot the computer the cpu cooler fan will spin for 2 seconds then nothing. If I drain the power down and try again it boots just fine. If I restart rather than power down it works just fine. Is this a mobo issue?

Issue 2. I have two identical NVIA GEFORCE GTX 970 cards. I have installed both cards in the two red slots (black one is not used). Both show up in device manger. Both show up in GPU-Z. Both are identical for drivers etc. Yet, when I go to NVIDIA control panel there is no option for configure SLI. I have tried the SLI bridge in different slots, tried a different SLI bridge, reseated the cards, verified each worked fine, rolled back drivers tried again, etc. I finally contacted NVIDIA technical support and they said the cards should be in the top red slot and the only black slot on the board. From what I read and researched, this was not the case. The SLI bridge Asus sent me is not even that long. So, can someone confirm which two of the three slots my cards should go in. Further, what else should I be trying to see about SLI? Nothing indicates there is anything in the bios I need to do in order to get SLI running. Could it be a mobo problem?

I know these probably seem like noob questions, but I am a noob to all of this and need some help to fix this.

Thank you in advance for any help.

I do not have nvida cards but AMD but I would think the same slots. I am using the two red slots. The top one is PCIE_X16x8_1 and the second slot is PCIE_8x_2. On Page 1-24 of your manual It would be slots 2 and slot 4. On Nvida you definitely have to use the SLI bridge for both cards to work. Last I heard anyways..

What is your power supply brand/wattage?
