Turbo of 4770 only 3700MHz after bios update

Hello everyone,

I'm new to this forum and new to the ROG family.
I recently build a new computer, these are the core components:

intel i7 4770
Asus Maximus VI Hero
Crucial balistic 16 Gb (2 x 😎
I run win8 64bit

I just updated the bios of the MB to 0711. This went without problems but now I notice that my cpu is only going to 3700 MHz (100 x 37) when stressed. This used to be 3900 MHz (100 x 39)

I have changed nothing in the bios except selected the XMP profile .

Anyone have an Idea to fix this and let it go back to 3900 MHz

Thx

Nico

The Turbo frequency is dependant on the number of cores that are being used.

That is the design built in by Intel.

So if you are getting 37 then two cores are being used in your experiments.

When I run prime95 I can see 8 workers, does that not mean there are 4 cores running and 8 threads but still it is only 3700 @ 100% load.

Default speeds for 4770K within TDP/current constraints are as follows:

1 core active - 3.9GHz
2 cores active - 3.8GHz
3 or 4 cores active - 3.7GHz

If you want all cores to run at 3.9GHz when loaded set CPU Core Ratio to Sync All Cores and enter 39 in the 1-Core Ratio Limit field in the UEFI.

Hi Praz,

I have the non K vertion of the 4770. But I have done as you said.
Sync all cores was enabled, I have put 39 in the first core ratio.
CPU-Z still say 3700MHz multiplier x 37

This was not the case before the update to 0711 then my core speed was 3900MHz and multiplier was x39

It being the non-K version might be the problem. Do you have the 'Asus multicore enhancement' feature enabled? IIRC that overrides Intels settings and lets all 4 cores run on max turbo speed, in you case 3,9 ghz.

sorry to be off topic, but you really should have spent the extra 20 bucks on the k version. if possible i would get it exchanged.

Hi Dirk,

Since the update to 0711 I can only select 'Auto' or 'Diable' for the ASUS multicore enhancement. Before with the first UEFI bios I could select 'Enable' or 'Disable'. Maybe this 'Auto' function will not set it to 'enable' for the non K.
Can I go back to the previous Bios? just flash it back or can you only flash a bios upwards?

@ Jasonelmore, I do not need the K version, I wil not be overclocking. 3.9Ghz is enough for me (if I can get it to 3.9 🙂 )
An the K- verion does not have TSX, vPro, and VT-d.

You could always go back to the BIOS version that you were happy with. You are able to flash back via USB flashback.

And true the non K version does have all the virtualisation options unlike the K version.

Thx Hivizman, I will probably go back to the first bios over the weekend.
I will post the results then.
