Trouble with PCE-AC68 wireless on Maximus VII Hero

Hi.
I got an Asus Maximus VII Hero motherboard that refuses to find my Asus PCE-AC68 wireless card. The wireless card works in two other computers I have so it's not dead.
Other relevant hardware: I got a Geforce GX980 Strix graphics card in the PCIEX16_1 slot. And a Soundblaster ZxR in the PCIEX4 slot.

Things I tried before reinstalling windows:
- First I just installed it in the PCIEX1_1 slot assuming that would be fine. Not even detected in windows.
- So I moved it to the PCIEX1_3 slot directly above the soundcard. Same problem.
- Swapped the soundcard and wireless card (so the soundcard was in PCIEX1_3 and wireless in PCIEX4) still not working.
- I know about the lack of pci express lanes on this motherboard so I tried PCIEX4 both on auto (which should work) and manually setting it to x1. Neither helped. Soundcard and graphicscard was always working, wireless card was never even detected by windows.

Then I did some googling and saw some people say they had trouble getting it to work if you had a upgraded windows. Since I upgraded from 8.1 to 10 and never bothered to do a fresh install after, I figured it was time. So fresh install of windows it is!
- After the install I installed all the usual drivers and programs I use. And lo and behold, suddenly the wireless card worked. For a few hours.
- Next morning the same crap again. Wireless not even detected. And I've been unable to get it working again since.
- Tried moving it around again, PCIEX1_1, PCIEX1_3 and PCIEX4. No luck. I haven't tried the PCIEX1_2 port beause that would end up blocking one of the fans on the graphicscard.
- Also tried the same 3 slots with the soundcard removed. Still nothing.
- New bios was released for the hero in the middle of this, so I upgraded to 3103 and still nothing. I was on the previous version.

Which brings me to my question; anybody have any suggestions to what I can try next? I can't run a cable to the room my computer is in now. So I really need to get the wireless working. I'm currently considering a new motherboard or wireless card. Shame that the TP-link card uses the same Broadcom chipset as the Asus card. I'm worried I'll just get the exact same problems with that.
