Trouble booting to Windows

So, my first time posting here.

I've just upgraded my computer with Maximus VII Hero motherboard with i7-4790K. First, I forgot to plug in the 4/8 Pin on the very top so it took me a bit to figure out that both 24 pin and 8 pin needed to be connected.

Now, my problem is that the computer boots up, goes through the windows loading bar for a second at most and goes into Windows Error Recovery. I've tried to do Launch Startup Repair and system restore, does work. Choosing Start Window Normally puts me back to the Windows Error Recovery page.

I've tried to see if RAMs were the problem, took out either G.Sklll or Mushkin RAM out and ran it and had same problem.

I don't know if this maybe the problem, but I've only got 6 gold stands for the motherboard, seeing ASUS didn't give me any and I had none to spare.

I will be trying to update the BIOS soon with USB see if that helps.

Meanwhile, here's my computer in full.

i7-4790K (Not OC'ed)
G.Skill DDR 1333 MHz 2x2GB
Mushkin Silverline 2x4GB
Samsung 840 Pro SSD
WD 640GB & 2TB HDD
Corsair VX550W PSU
GTX 760 4GB (Wasn't connected for any of the bootup tries)

Just to be clear, did you only upgrade your CPU? Or is the motherboard new as well? It's a little unclear in that sentence there.

Have you checked BIOS to see if it correctly detects all your hardware and the new CPU? Is it the correct boot order?

If you mean the motherboard standoff screws, they are usually included with the case/tower and not the motherboard. However, it doesn't cause WIndows boot issues if you miss a few of those screws.

Well since you've upgraded your hardware you need to perform a clean install of windows in order to make it work right.

Yep, you need a clean install of Windows when changing motherboard. I believe this is the cause of your problem.

Sorry, the CPU and the motherboard are new. It detects all the SSD and HDDs and the CPU as well.

And when you say correct boot order, do you mean the sequence of the HDD that the system boots from?

You need to enter the bios and set it ahci and in the bbs drive lisings order your hd/ssd's and your optical drives. Then go to the boot order and make sure that the optical is first, use the uefi lising to install windows in uefi mode and then the boot ssd. Place your windows media in the optical drive and reboot.

I figured as much. Unfortunately, as I have no Windows 7 install CD with me (obtained current copy thru free distribution from the university years ago) I had to take it in. As much as I wanted to do it myself to save money, it was a resource that I do not have. The guy that I went to see told me that the main problem was the current SSD being configured as IDE to my previous motherboard and he switched that into AHCI on the BIOS setting it booted up. I'll have the computer back on either Monday or Tuesday so I'll update as soon as I get it back.

If you have your product key you could go here and get a copy. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-recovery

There are also ways to retrieve that key..

I save all of my software keys from the university in a folder just in case I have to reinstall my software again. I burn everything to a dvd right away so I will always have the installation media available.
