Trouble adding an Asus BluRay drive to a ROG Z590-a mb

I've added a bluray/dvd burner to my system. The Z590 mb "sees" it in BIOS. But windows 11 does not see it at all.  I do not have RAID at all, and it boots to an NVME drive.  In Windows device manager I do not see cd/dvd drives as a category or ide/atapi ( I have 'show hidden...' selected too). I've changed the  sata port it is on. I Set one of the mb  PCH settings to legacy, made no difference. I found an article about a similar win10 issue with atapi registry setttings, there are no corrupt settings, the ones that are expected to be there are there. This is maddening that the bluray drive is not showing up...
Any ideas?
