Too much voltage makes CPU unstable? - Maximus VI Extreme

Hi there,

I have a 4770K with a maximus VI extreme. Been having fun overclocking the cpu. Got it stable to 4.7 GHZ with 1.264V with IBT.

However when I increase my vcore to 1.3 V or greater, the computer locks up while it was stable at 1.264V. More volts = less stable??? Has anyone else encountered this phenomenon?

I also increased VCCIN (input and actual to cpu) up to 2.0 V - no effect on increasing CPU stability with higher Vcores....

Temperatures are very good. Delidded the cpu so running at 70 C max with IBT.

I am puzzled.

Thanks for reading all! Hope to get some insight into this...

Is there a maximum current that can go through the cpu? could i be loading it up too far with IBT?

in tweakers paradise
lower eventual pll termination voltage to 1.000v
increase xtalk cancellation volt to 1.25v
.

Also....Any specific settings in the mobo that could be current or voltage limiting the OC preventing higher than 1.3V?

hey shamino - tried your above tweaks but still getting hardlocks with voltages more than 1.3V on vcore....tried changing cpu power cables, etc no luck with anything!

Has anyone else had this issue with haswell cpus? I feel like my cpu could go alot further but cant push it because of this limitation!

Please try this.

Clear CMOS

Go into your bios and leave all on auto.

Now navigate to vCore
set manually to 1.4

F10 and enter

Boot to OS and run a one minute stress test or super pi or what ever just to load the CPU.

Have HWmonitor open or the latest version of CPUz and take note of your vcore when your system is under load. If your CPU does not reflect more than 1.3 I would be very surprised.

Hi HiVizMan,

Tried reseting CMOS and increasing voltage in bios - would not even boot. then tried everything on auto after reseting cmos in windows using AI suite 3, hard lock immediately.

I would suggest your CPU is faulty and RMA is your next option. If possible you could ask a friend to pop your CPU in their system to test it out for you.

thanks hivizman, will try the cpu swap if I ever get a chance. But pushing 4.7 with 1.25V is not a bad chip 🙂
