Some doubts about R4E and SB-E

Gentlemen,

My name is Federico, i'm from Argentina. Here, hardware is very expensive. It's normal if you enter into some e-shops and someone is trying to get from you the DOUBLE that an US reseller does.

Well, the fact is that i bought a great rig, with so much effort and savings. But, i'm noob regarding this kind of hardware.
It has so many features and cool stuff, that i have no hands enough to handle all of it :p.
So here, i have a little questions about my rig, which, by the way is:

  • R4E
  • Intel 3930k SB-E
  • GSkill RipJawsX 4Gb 1866MHz x2 (8 in total)
  • Cooler Master eXtreme Power 600W
  • MSI GTS 250 Twin Frozr II 512 Mb

Yes, i'm planning to upgrade the vga and the PSU. Just i ran out of money, lol.

Well, my question is:

R4E supports up to DDR3 2400(O.C.)/2133(O.C.)/1866, so that's why i got the RipJawsX DDR3. However, my CPU does support "only" 1600 MHz.
Can somebody explain me what happens there? does the CPU downgrade the MHz of the mems? The entire build accomodate acording to that? So, what's the point of OC'n the rams? I think that there is no processor which works with "2300 MHz".

Ok, that's all for now. I will add some little noob questions as soon somebody replies me.

are you using the XMP profile for the ram
Rampage IV Extreme
3930k C2 stepping intel cpu
Gskill 32gb kit F3-17000CL9Q2-32GBZH
GTX 760
GTX 560ti
Areca 1882 Raid Controller
Crucial m4 SSDs 256gb two disk raid 0
Enermax 1350w maxrevo PSU
Cosmos 2 case

No sir, as i mentioned, i'm noob with high-end stuff because i never have had this kind of expensive stuff, but... What XMP profile does? With all my respect, your advice only tells me: "Hey dude, you're forgetting something", but saddly, you're not responding my question 😞

The ram should be fine.
The intel spec is just that, an Intel spec. If your ram has an xmp profile you can just set it to profile #1 and see if you boot.

The chip will run just fine with higher speed ram, some better than others as usual. The chip will not downclock the ram.

DooRules is spot on.

The default ram frequency from Intel is 1600MHz.
To run at the speed your ram is advertised at you need to overclock your ram.
XMP profile is the easy way.

Thank you guys! I have activated the XMP on BIOS, and now i see those rams running at 1866MHz. Sorry for being persistent, but... What does XMP do? I'm "forcing" the CPU to work @1866? I'm OCing the RAMS? What am i doing by this?
I'm asking this just because i'm thirsty of knownledge.

Thanks in advance.

Fede.

yes.
but don't worry, running @1866, or @2133 is very very safe for SB-E platform for 24/7 use.
you get nothing @2200+ but just only for benchmark or break some record 😄

for your system, just try to downvolt, here may help you.
- VTT CPU Voltage: set to 1.15
- 2nd VTT CPU Voltage: set to 1.05
- CPU VCCSA Manual Voltage: set to 1.1
- DRAM Volatge (CHA, CHB): set to 1.6
- DRAM Volatge (CHC, CHD): set to 1.6

if you can't post or have some crash on windows, try to set DRAM Voltage (CHA, CHB, CHC, CHD) to 1.65

the others, leave it Auto.
