SIO Power on Delay Fail (Non O.C.)

*UPDATE* - I sent the motherboard back to be tested for errors, and they have sent me a new one. The fault was with the motherboard.

Helly everyone, I'm new here. I hope I'm posting in the right place.

I have a problem with my recently purchased Maximus VI Hero motherboard. I have been searching the forums, but I can only find posts related to overclocking.

My problem is, that sometimes (not everytime, but fairly often) when I switch on my computer, the computer resets emmediately and powers on again (exactly as if certain BIOS settings has been changed).

But when it powers on again, I sometimes get the error message "SIO Power on Delay Fail. Press F1...". The odd thing is, that sometimes when the computer resets, it just boots normally, and does not show the SIO-error. That confuses me quite a bit.

I've mostly found forum issues relating to overclocking, but I run this setup at stock speed, and factory settings. I have been overclocking for a lot of years, but I decided to stop doing that, and bought this setup with that in mind (see specs below).

I have found a wikipedia article about this error message though, and it says the following :

"The Power Good signal prevents a computer from attempting to operate on improper voltages and damaging itself by alerting it to improper power supply. Power good value is based on the delay in ms, that a power supply takes to become fully ready. Power good values are often considered abnormal if detected lower than 100ms or higher than 600ms".

So it seems that it is related to the PSU. I have a Corsair HX1050 PSU, just under a year old, and it has been running flawlessly with an i7 2600K @ 4.8 GHz on an ASUS P8Z68-V Pro /GEN3 motherboard and dual AMD 7970 GFX (and later an R9 290), until I bought the Maximus VI Hero last month.

The motherboard runs at factory settings, except from disabled onboard sound. I've tried BIOS 1302 (was installed on the MB when I recieved it). 1402, and now even 1502 BETA, to see if that changed anything. No results.

Is it the PSU, can it be the motherboard? Or the new CPU (i7 4770K), what do you guys think?

Other parts:
4770K with @ stock with Noctua NH-D14. No errors with Prime95
16 GB Kingston Hyper-X Genesis 1600 Mhz RAM (No errors in MemTest86). I used them on my prior setup.
AMD R9 290 (with Arctic Cooling Accelero Xtreme IV). No errors in stresstests. Also used with my prior setup.
SoundBlaster ZxR soundcard. Also used on prior setup.
SanDisk Extreme II 250 GB SSD.
Seagate 2 TB HDD.
WD 1 TB HDD.

The thing is, that the computer almost always double boot, in spite of being plugged in all the time and not being drained for power. And a lot of those times, it also displays the "SIO Power.." error message.

I totally agree that it is normal to double boot after being completely drained for power, that makes perfect sense as you say, but I would think that it should only happen after changing certain BIOS settings in Extreme Tweaker, or when drained for power. That's how my prior ASUS board behaved (ASUS P8Z68-V Pro /Gen 3). But that is not how this board behaves.

However, today it did boot up nicely, just the normal procedure.. -I hope it has to do with disabling the "Power Surge Support" setting, as suggested by HiVizMan.

But again, I can't be completely sure, because sometimes it did boot in a normal way. It annoys me really bad, that the issue is so erratic, and not completely predictable. Otherwise I would be able to tell for certain, if this fix did the trick. But I sure hope so, and today the computer did boot up nicely, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed 🙂

I will still try to borrow a Volt meter as suggested by jab383, I might as well test everything now that I'm working on it.

If I gave you the PSU, you would hate it, haha (j/k). But honestly. it is SOOO noisy when it is being stressed, not when pushed to the limit, but during average gaming for instance. It is completely quiet when browsing and so on, but as soon as you fire up a game, it sounds like a jet during take off.

But if it turns out, that this fix worked, I'll look into changing the fan, although it voids the warranty. Because it comes with nice black cables, PCI-e connecters are sleeved, and tehere are a lot of connectors (a lot more than I will ever need). The cables have a good length and it feels very sturdy. It looks alright too, although that is not very important since my case doesn't have a window.

But that noise though.. :S

🙂 If it's noisy I don't want it either 😞 I have a PC Power&Cooling PS and it has been rock solid through three MB and CPU upgrades and costs a fortune back then compared to PSes today. Good luck with the troubleshooting hope you find the issue. Report back if you do.

I had a Corsair HX620 for 6 or 7 years, and I was extremely happy with it. When I bought it, it was much more powerful than what was needed at the time, and very expensive compared to what I could have settled for. But I've upgraded complete PCs several times on that PSU, and it wasn't until I upgraded to 2 x HD 7970 GHz Edition, that I upgraded to a more powerful PSU.

It was pretty much the same reason why I bought the HX1050, I don't need a 1000 watts at all, but I had the other one for so long, because I initially bought what was a powerful PSU at the time. I was also very satisfied with it, so I was expecting to keep this one for a while too. But it is way too noisy, it definately isn't a keeper in the long run. The old one was almost silent. And it is even more annoying since I have relatively quiet CPU- and GPU cooling.

But so far everything looks good. I'm off to bed now, so it's going to be interesting to see, if it just keeps going tomorrow 😄

Hello again.

It's been a little while, and I still have problems with the computer. No error messages, but the computer pretty much always double boots. I've noticed a few things about it.

I have 3 case fans. A 200 mm in the front and top, and a 120 mm fan in the back. I have noticed that the top fan doesn't spin from the beginning. It goes like this.

I press the power button. The computer powers up, (at least) one fan not spinning, shuts down, and then boots as normal (all fans spinning, and so on).
No more error messages, but still that strange boot procedure -which by the way doesn't happen if I turn the computer off and then on again within a short period of time. But overnight, it pretty much happens all the time.

I can not figure out what the problem is. When the computer is running, I get no strange BSODs, no error messages, in short, there's nothing that indicates that there is any problems at all. It's really puzzeling.

In a way, it is not really a problem, but I'm pretty sure it isn't supposed to be like this.

EDIT :

I haven't been able to borrow a voltmeter yet.

I've been thinking about swapping the battery on the motherboard out for a new one, but I'm pretty much 100% sure that it has nothing to do with the issues. The board remembers BIOS settings, date and time, and so on. I'm just so confused, I'm ready to try all sorts of things, that I already know is pointles.

I decided to buy a new motherboard (I bought a Maximus VII Hero, instead of the Maximus VI Hero). I know it seems strange to replace the motherboard, since everything pointed towards the PSU.

However, I installed the new motherboard yesterday, and the problem has gone away. At least so it appears for the time being.

Now I just don't know wheter to RMA the board or not. If there is nothing wrong with it, I have to pay a relatively big fee for the time spend testing it, but on the other hand, there are no errors or double booting issues with the new board. But I also don't want to sell a defective board to someone else.

I guess I'll have to try to contact the dealer.

I'll report back, if the problem should re-occur.

The fact of the matter is the new board works, the old one does not. Therefore defective. If they give you problems point them at this thread.

I sent the motherboard back to the shop, to be tested for errors. They have sent me a new board, so the errors appear to have been caused by the motherboard.
