Silly question: sata port numbering

Sianmink

in the double-stacked SATA ports, does numbering go top-bottom or bottom-top?

|5---|3---|1---|
|6---|4---|2---|

or
|6---|4---|2---|
|5---|3---|1---|
=========== <- motherboard

It's not really clear at a glance.

Its easier to look at the manual or download the .pdf and look at it while looking inside your case.

Yeah the manual really doesn't make it clear.

The easiest is to connect a single drive, boot into the UEFI and see which port the drive is assigned to. I believe most of my boards are as shown in the second diagram.

The manual for the Crosshair V Formula Z has a very clear diagram. It seems reasonable to assume that your manual has a similar diagram

Dr. Z

If that's accurate then I've got it. Thanks.

You do not state Mobo model but the M6E is laid out like this.

33232

The bottom ones are not Intel ports and port 5 is disabled if you use the Wifi/BT card.

Mine's an M6 Hero and it's about exactly the opposite of yours.

I agree with @Sianmink, the MB diagram is not fully clear.
Would the numbering start from the bottom, or from the top?

Actually, it is subject to interpretation. Not everybody is supposed to know the convention in this regard, and Asus should make it more clear (especially when, in some cases [like the use of NVMe] a SATA port #x might be disabled)

On my Rog Strix Z390-F, SATA 1 is on top, SATA 2 is at the bottom (closer to the MB).

On the Strix X570-E the ports totally wrong!!!
