second graphics card undetected maximus v extreme

Hi,

I recently purchased the maximus v extreme to allow my two gtx 680 dc2t cards which are three slot cards to have some breathing room between them by putting them in slots 1 and 3. Everything worked fine for the first day but the next morning in noticed that the second graphics card isn't being detected by the board although the card's fans are spinning and power leds are green. I know this as only one light on the pcie lane switch is on(lane 1) and the device is also not detected in windows. The card is detected again after reseating the card, or by switching the two cards around, but the problem seems to occur every morning. Can anyone offer me any advice? Do I have a faulty motherboard?

Thanks

So i've tried to just use one graphics card in the broken slot and it isn't detected at all.. I'm pretty sure the slot is broken. It seems to have completely died and nothing I do is getting it to work anymore. Probably need an RMA?

might be physical or BIOS related... did the second card seat fully in the slot? are any other cards present in PCIe slots save for GPUs? have you tried swapping cards between slots?

edit:
also, does the BIOS see both cards every time you go into it? reported under GPU.DIMM post tab. if BIOS doesn't see it then it might be physical, check that first.

Yeh sometimes when I can't get them to work, I switch them around and they will work again for a while. I only have gpus in the slots. I could put the bottom card into 2b but the cards will be practically touching. I don't particularly want this as the top card will be extremely loud and temps go as high as 90 degrees.

so they are placed in slots PCIe3.0_1 and 3 now? or rather 2B and you meant 2A as being too close?

per manual those are slot names:
red PCIe_1 (16x if single or 8x native)
(empty space)
red PCIe_2A (16x switched)
black PCIe_2B (8x native)
red PCIe_3 (8x switched)
black short pcie x4
red PCIe_4 (8x switched)

are you sing a flexible 2-way bridge now? not saying this is an issue, no not at all, but I have an idea since no other devices are present. move the secondary card further down and connect those 2 using a solid 3-way SLI bridge. the secondary will then run through synthetic (multiplexed via PLX chip) 8x while primary in top slot will stay on native 8x, but it should work still without trouble. wondering if your slot 2B (native 8x) work fine ... or maybe (if cards are functional fully, confirmed by swapping them around) the BIOS is quirky about them both at once ...

... but first make sure the secondary is fully seated and coming loose after a while.

No, what i mean is i have it in the fourth slot, being pcie_3 as putting it in 2B will be too close as these are three slot DC2T cards. I tried to use the three way bridge but it won't fit with these cards unfortunately.

I have put my secondary card back into slot 2b. The temperatures rose to 81 degrees on the hottest card after almost an hour of game play. Is this temperature safe?

temp wise it's a bit on a warm side. I'd try keeping it below 70C, besides Keplers start minimally throttling (thermally) above 70C. how is air flow in your case? what temps are you getting on 2nd card when placed in slot #3? so the 3-sli bridge doesn't fit those cards, kinda weird...

those cards are thick!

the second card is at 63 degrees. I would rather put the card in the fourth slot to keep the temps cooler and have everything run more quietly but for some reason pcie_3 isn't working half the time... do you think I should bother rmaing the board?
