SATA question with R.O.G. Crosshair iii Formula

Hey I have a ASUS R.O.G. Crosshair iii Formula.

Now with this board everywhere just says SATA 3gb/s, so I assume its SATA1 ?
Now should I buy a sata 2 or 3 for it, or will it work backwards compatibility?
And if It does work backwards will it just run at sata speed of the 3gb/s?
