RIVE + 64 GB Corsair Dominator (8x8) RAM - only recognizes 48GB

Hi,

Need some help here. All 8 modules are well seated, were tested individually, and all are functional. Yet when all 8x8GB are placed on Rampage IV Extreme mobo, BIOS reports only finding 48 GB.

Stranger yet - the BIOS finds each DIMM in each channel and recognizes it (amount, speed, timings, etc...) so the board knows the RAM is there, it simply won't acknowledge post-48GB.

I decided to not stress and install the OS - perhaps it was a BIOS reporting glitch. Win 8 Pro x64 only reports 48 GB though. I bought this mobo for the 64GB support - it's even on the box - but I can't get it to acknowledge all ram. All ram is functional, tested individually, and properly seated. Seems to be a BIOS issue.

A thorough search of the net yielded 2 other people this had occurred to - same issue encountered (different ram, but all QVL) - however NO response on how to fix this issue.

Anyone? I'm desperate for my last 16GB (and yeah, I need it, I do a lot of rendering). CPU is i7-3960x. RIVE BIOS has NOT been updated - the sticker on the box of "Win 8 ready" was a little rushed guys - the ASUS support CD won't install - instead reporting: "This OS is NOT supported". 😞

Yup, still have the same problem.

Some notes:
1. Adjusted slots, all functional.
2. RAM is seated properly.
3. Built ram up module by model, caps out at 48 regardless of banks used
4. Board detects all DIMMS when they are installed, but claims only 48.
NOTE: Also tried 48 GB with 6 DIMMS and then swapped DIMMS to prove all work at 48 GB. Just can't get it to read 64GB.
5. RAM tested with MemTest, painstakingly (2+ hours per dimm) for each DIMM, all passed 100%
6. Memory vendor stumped, says it should work and it is compliant for RIVE
7. Vendor offered replacement memory, but i said no, because there weren't any issues with the DIMMS themselve.
8. Found a profile online and changed RIVE settings to match it, still 48 GB cap
9. Slowed memory down one step, still 48 GB cap
10. Just gave up and now wait for someone much smarter than me to post the solution.
11. Have now found this problem 5 times on the net - none with any resolution.

So good luck, and keep me posted. 🙂

Are the extra power plugs plugged into motherboard? the ones near the PCIE slot 1?

Good point, but yes - there's no shortage of power in this system with a 1200 watt power supply and power sent to every connection (including the mem one) on the RIVE board (which, as we know, has plenty of sockets).

Also, I doubt it's a power issue - the mem vendor said it wouldn't be likely but never gave me consumption specs. But that aside, the RIVE is the best powered mobo that I have come across, and if it couldn't power the RAM then it's doubtful it would be able to display each DIMM per socket in the BIOS | MEMORY section.

Right now I have my fingers crossed that the next BIOS update will fix it.

One last thing I want to clarify so it doesn't look like I'm upset with the mem vendor - Corsair has been awesome with their technical support, in fact I was quite impressed. They're a class-A company. But it probably is a compatability problem and hopefully a future BIOS fix will rectify it.

Corsair Dominator (8x8) is a proven memory kit with ASUS RIVE.. alot of people are using it with this system.. so.. I think you are correct.. it's not the memory.

BTW.. which bios version you running? As I remember when I got my RIVE when it first came out.. I have since upgrade like 5 bios versions.. maybe it's a bit old. I am currently running on 3101 with 64GB, and can vouch for up to 3010, anything before that I was running 32gb Corsair Vengence.. (and it was fully recognised.. 2kits x 4x4gb.)

Also, mabye it's your bios settings.. have you tried using default optimised settings for BIOS? find the base line before you tweak it.. including a sanity check.. as for my computer..i have never been able to overclock my ram to the XMP specs @ 2400, so I have to manually change it...otherwise it won't boot.

Sorry, I'm just sharing with you my experiences.. hopefully it may help you.

I suspect that you are going to have to reseat your CPU, again if you have done so before and work at getting the balance just perfect. No idea why this happens with some CPU's but it does.

I know that I have had to do it four times on one build before all 64GB was picked up.

I had the same problem as you,64 gig of 8x8 and only 48 of showed. I spent alot of time with HiVizMan back and forth about it and it did turn out that after checking all the modules 1 at a time and them passing, that there were 2 bent pins in the motherboard CPU socket! took a dentist pick carefully straighten them and all the memory showed up. I know it's a pain to unseat the CPU but if you have tried memtesting the memory modules I would highly recomend it.

Wow 64GB of ram... I hope all goes well for your CPU reseating. Let me blow you some of my good luck powers!!!! I got 2 kits of 4x4 GSKill ripjaws to work out to 32GB ram

Look for best pins in the socket. Look VERY cloesly.

Make sure you set the timings manually as shown with the kit. Also run VCCSA and VTT at 1.25v. Your IMC might require this extra help for 64 GB. Set speed manually to 1600.
