Random No Signal - Black Screen - GTX 1080 + ASUS Rampage IV Black Edition X79

Hi guys,

recently (last 3-4 months) I have encountered an issue where my screen randomly (Windows desktop, playing games, watching videos) turns black with NO SIGNAL message. The only way to fix it is to restart the PC.
The PC is not crashing, you can still hear it working, the HDD led is blinking from time to time and all the fans are working correctly.
So far I have checked this and:
- It’s not the screen as it also happens when I plug the PC to my TV
- It’s not the GPU as it occurred with 3 different GPUs (2 different GTX 1080 and 1 GTX760)
- It’s not the cable as it occurs with both DP and HDMI cables
- It’s not the a particular nVidia driver as it occurred with few previous ones and occurs with the latest
- It’s not the OC as it happens when the GPU is almost idle with standard clocks
- Not the PSU as it’s a new Corsair 1000W
- Both power cables from the PSU are plugged to my Motherboard (in case someone would suggest that)
- My power saving options are set to Performance and hibernation/sleep modes are disabled
- Windows is fully up 2 date

I checked the Windows Event log and when the issue occurs it creates a Warning log with the info that the video driver stopped working and recovered (it looks like it`s not recovering though ).

PC:
iCPU: i7 4930k, 6 Cores, OC @ 4,5Ghz
GPU: GTX 1080
MOBO: ASUS Rampage IV Black Edition X79
RAM: 64GB G.SKILL RipjawsZ @ 1600Mhz, Quad Channel
MONITOR: Acer Predator XB270HU 27", 2560x1440, 144hz, G-Sync,
HDD: Kingston HyperX 240GB SSD, CRUCIAL M550 1TB SSD
OS: WINDOWS 10 PRO 64-Bit
PSU: CORSAIR RM1000x - 1000W
AUDIO: Sound Blaster ZxR

Any ideas? I’m not a noob user, building my rigs for over 15 years but I’m close to giving up on this on.
Any BIOS setting?!

You're not alone. I've got the same issue.

https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/955527/geforce-drivers/windows-10-build-1607-randomly-black...

They're still trying to figure it out at this point. I see a lot of people with Rampage IV Blacks and 1070/1080 in the first few pages. Hopefully it's a nvidia thing and not something bigger.

this is very interesting. I have been having the exact issue for months. I even sent the card to the store and they tested it for 3 days and didn't find an issue.

my motherboard model is rampage iv gene. but it's the same chipset so processor line.

I went and bought a rx460 and gt740. tested them both with no issues for days. so it's a GTX 1070 and mobo compatibilty problem of some sorts.

it's very random could happen within hours or weeks. everything is fine then boom no signal. I got frustrated and people on other threads got frustrated with me trying to help me with no avail.

to OP if he still has the problem.
disable intel virtualization technology from both under CPU configurations and advanced configurations in bios. I did that few hours ago and fingers crossed issue won't arise anytime soon. I'll report back after 4 days or when the issue happens again.

edit: after 1 day of uptime the issue happened again. I've already listed my gtx 1070 and going to sell it in the next few days.
I installed the RX460 back into my system and put the msi 1070 into it's box ready for it's next owner. I can't afford to buy a new mobo and processor just so I can use a 1070

update: sold the gtx 1070 and made 50$ of what I bought it for.
I now have rx460 in my system unlocked and oced. I'll leave the system on for a week just to be sure. but I would say the headache is gone

I have the exact same problem as you, but I am running a Core i7 4960X @ 4.4GHz (Offset Voltage +0.070) with 32GB G.Skill RAM @ 2133 MHz.
Latest Windows 10 PRO x64 with all updates.
MSI GeForce GTX 1080 Ti AERO 11GB OC edition.
SAMSUNG 40" UHDTV
ASUS RAMPAGE IV BLACK EDITION BIOS 0801
Custom Water Cooled Loop ( Pump -> GPU -> RAD -> CPU -> RAD -> Pump)

If I login to the ADMINISTRATOR account, everything works fine.
If I login to my user and I right click the desktop and left click DESKTOP SETTING - BLACK SCREEN !!!
It happens IMMEDIATELY....
I have reported this to nVidia to see if they do anything.
I have tried 378.78 which is the first driver to support the Ti and 384.94 which is the latest driver.
Black Screen issue was reported here... -> https://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/nvidia-releases-geforce-37878-whql-drivers/
Under KNOWN ISSUES it says "Pascal GPUs on notebook might remain blank and require a reboot after overinstalling the driver."
nVidia knows about this. I wonder if it is in the Pascal die.....

I did a DDU wipe and a CUSTOM CLEAN Install with just Drivers, Physx, and GeForce Xperience,
No 3D Drivers or Audio Drivers.
It is the stupidist thing.

I bought and installed an EK 1080 GPU Water Block, a second PE 240 radiator and replaced my RX 480 8GB with this card and I really don't want to go back.
nVidia better wake up and fix this because I can't play games under my ADMIN account...
I am going to try a DP to HDMI cable and see if it works.
My whole install was working great for about 5 hours and then BLACK SCREEN...
Now the system only stay up for 5 minutes at the most.

Same Problem, If you find solution anyone i beg someone reply me! I am facing this hell of problem past 3 months!

Also Heads Up i checked the Event Log "nvlddmkm stopped responding " is in the log......so i cant say which is making the nvidia driver act so abnormally.

i literally checked every Hardware in the pc none has any wear or tear since i barely overclock or use it that harshly, im guessing either asus's fault for not updating the Mobo driver or windows 10 update or nvidia having issues with the x79 boards.

So Today i faced a Error: it shows a Q-Code Error- of "0E" which is a microcode error...now i am waiting for assistance from people to guide if its fixable or not.....i think this is the root cause to all our problems.

Hi,

I have the same problem but I have an Asus GL552VX. I have a GeForce GTX950 video card on top of the onboard one. I have 32GB of RAM. i keep getting these black screens randomly and everything I tried is not working. I have tried all possible things from Windows 10, Nvidia drivers to switching to only one video card. When it crashes (more like a freeze) the only thing you can do is power down and there is no event log or minidump file to look at because it is not a BSOD.

What are your thoughts?

P.S It's driving me crazy.

The Only solution i found is using a AMD card is not making your system crash, The Main cause of this Error is Windows 10 & Nvidia Drivers!

Long as Microsoft and Nvidia dont work together they wont ever fix this, However i am trying many thing at the moment if i find a Solution i will reply to you all, I am trying daily and i have almost gone mad trying to fix this.....but lets see i try few more tests.

If i find a Solution i will update the Thread here too: https://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?96085-Random-quot-No-Signal-quot-Issue-past-3-months-on-As...

Update 25th September 2017 - Temporary Solution Found....Work for The Rampage IV Black Edition Board.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#1.Disable your Compatibility Support Module (CSM) in the Boot Option before u start the System.

#2. So far Disabling CSM has my my System far stable than before...i dont crash, there are 2 program which makes my system
crash even if csm is off that is the Firefox and Bluestacks otherwise disbaling CSM has made Nvidia Driver work very Stable for Windows 10.

Dont use firefox while you are gaming u will 100% crash even if CSM is disabled, I suspect the Bug is windows 10 & Nvidia not firefox or Bluestacks.

Additional Steps That must be followed With CSM disabled:

My No signal Issue is not completely gone, it still happens to me the only thing i have manged is to delay to crash, By my method u can run the PC max 7hrs to 12Hrs but some program in windows 10 always trigger the Nvidia Driver to crash, i only have managed to make nvidia driver stable by my random trail and error.

Anyway i wrote more steps in this thread, try to follow them if they work or not.
