Rampage IV Extreme Sound Problem

I just upgraded last night from my 3770k to a 3930k and a RIVE. When I plug my headphones in, all I hear is static. Onboard is enabled in the bios, and Front Panel is set to AC97 and SPDIF. My last Z77 board didn't have working sound either and I've been forced to use a USB sound card for the last year. When I plug in my headphones to the onboard jacks with the Realtek program open, I can hear static and it will randomly keep switching from speakers to microphone. I'm assuming the onboard audio is just bad and the only fix is an RMA, but I don't think I'm going to RMA unless I can get an advanced RMA. I can't be without a computer for over a week due to work.

Any other ideas? Or am I going to have to RMA this board and hope I get a working one.

Hey Jpump....I've recently experienced this too....I RMAd in the end because I paid top dollar and wanted the board I paid for to work but I understand the pragmatic approach I almost went that way myself.

See this thread for possible troubleshooting like changing from AC97 to HD etc.

I heard back from email support from Asus today, who told me my serial number was invalid and told me to resubmit the forum. He didn't say what was wrong with the serial number, just that it was invalid. Told him the serial number was copied directly from the My Products page, and started up a live chat with support. I knew the board I bought was used, but it turns out it was refurbished and only had a 90 day warranty, which hadn't been activated. So they asked for an invoice, and apparently an invoice from Ebay isn't valid, only online retailers such as Newegg. So, now I have try and get a refund from the place I bought the board from on Ebay and buy a brand new one from Newegg. The last two motherboards I've bought haven't had working onboard audio(Z77 and x79.)

Hmm that sucks.

The place you bought the board from should replace it for you I would have thought. They should do the RMA>

They should, but the'll just send me another refurbished one. I'd rather return it and buy a brand new one and get a real warranty. They accepted the return this morning. Have to wait until I get my new one from Newegg before I send it out though.

Got my new board from Newegg today and onboard sound is working just fine. Only thing I dislike about the board is the PCIE latches are behind the slots, instead of on the side like my old EVGA Z77 FTW.

The latches can be quite convenient when you have multiple video cards joined together for water cooling. You can press the latches down with a ruler one by one. They usually stay down when you pull the cards a little, allowing you to conveniently remove all cards together. The old latches are harder to reach between cards and don't remain released. They also cause difficulties if you have to remove a second or third air cooled video card that's next to the other one.
