Rampage IV Extreme - Overclocking Failed - Bios 4901 - Any Assistance Appreciated

Hi,

Recently updated bios to 4901, since then having intermittent issues, on occasion when the system is left idle for extended periods it hangs, mouse cursor remains active, cannot open task manager, shutdown pretty much only thing is hard power down, then on power up prompted with "Overclocking Failed", carried out all the typical tests from Ram removal (Stick by stick, Slot by slot) memtest, burntest, AIDA64 no problems found, what makes it more frustrating is it can run fine for days without issue, then at random intervals this occurs, also only happens following idle times.

Could it be a fault in the PSU? Any help is appreciated.

BIOS in the 4xxx series are IB-E aimed and can set different timings for your RAM. For example the XMP profile that you set with a 3xxx series profile might now be changed and not work.

I would try and use the BIOS flashback method and flash 3504 or one of the 3xxx series BIOS and see if that stops this....maybe you have your old BIOS on second BIOS chip? Try that.

The problems you are having sound typical RAM issues...and if they coincide with the BIOS update...

If you have a working system best not to update BIOS...

Hi Arne,

Thanks for this, I have flashed back to 3602, I will monitor and let you know how it goes.

So day 2 and no hanging, seemingly positive, will continue to monitor.

Day 4, and system hung, forced shutdown on startup "Overclocking Failed", alas back to square one.

Any other ideas?

Test the RAM with Memtest86+ at stock and at XMP...or however you run it normally.

I presume you are not OCing the CPU....or if you are have tried reverting back to stock...(stock everything in fact GPUs etc)...

And check event viewerfor any clues....driver problems....

If you have a spare PSU try that too...

Hello Arne, hi Hammersdawn, 😄

it would be interesting that Hammersdawn we describe the level of overclocking that is using during the problem of "ovlclk fail", because lately I also have this problem, and sometimes the BSOD 0x9c..000 or 0x5c..000.
I state that I use for a long time the bios 3602 that has never given any problems, and that this instability has begun since I touched my ovlclk CPU from 4600 to 4500 MHz, the memory speed from 2220 to 2200 by lowering the vcore offset by +0.050 to +0.025, the vtt from 1,130 to 1,120 and from 1,125 to vccsa 1,1volt, things I did during the summer to keep the core temp below 70C° during the stress tests, of course.
I used these low voltages because IntelBurnTest gave me incredibly 158-160 Gflops instead of the usual 152-155 Gflops with temps below 70C° instead of 75-77C°!
Hammersdawn, how are these your similar data?

Since the problem began, I have left the bios settings as default with no overclocking, the problem still occurs, I have a new PSU on order as soon as it arrives I will be able to monitor, previously my overclocking has been kept very simple, set overclock to XMP, Processor to 45, voltage to 1.35 and for well over a year not had any issues.
