Rampage IV Extreme - How to get 7.1 Audio using the Tosling port?

Stateless
Level 7
I have been struggling to get 7.1 Audio from my Rampage IV Extreme motherboard. When I use an optical cable and run it from my mother board to my sound system, the computer detects it but it only outputs in 2-channel stereo. I have tried all the latest drivers, mobo drivers are the latest etc.

How do you get 7.1 audio to work?

Natively SP/DIF and Toslink are only 2 channels. To get multi-channel there are two ways AFAIK.

1) your source is already multi-channel sound encoded and you use direct pass through
2)you require Dolby Digital Plus or DTS HD High Resolution codec

I've only seen #2 with dedicated sound cards. It requires additional licensing and perhaps also dedicated hardware to perform in real-time.

Great answer cx-ray, too bad I can't rep you caus eyou're on timer.

The only option is pass-through for this case. So you need encoded sound and a decoder on the other end of Toslink..

There is one other option...can you use RCA 3.5mm cables with your sound system?

Yes, my receiver has the ports for 3.5mm input. So do you think running the cables form the mobo to the receiver should give me 7.1?

If your receiver has the correct inputs it should.
