Yup, nice looking mobo but nothing there to get me off my 3960 and rive. Still waiting for x99 E here.

I'm in the same boat here. My RIVE and 3960X is simply running too strong to give up. If I were building from scratch an Asus Black and 4960X would be in order. But I'm sitting tight for X99 as well.

I don't think the newly announced "Rampage IV Black Edition" is a RIVE. It's a RIV, but not necessarily a RIVE, I think? If you look closely at the picture, several features of the RIVE are missing -- the chipset/nb/sb are all passive cooling (no fan+heatpipe), there are no voltage ProbeIT points, no LN sensors, etc.

Of course it's possible the image is just misleading OR that what they have built in to the new edition simply makes the old features unnecessary, but it's worth noting it is being announced specifically as the "RAMPAGE IV BLACK EDITION" and NOT the "Rampage IV Extreme Black Edition"

EVGA Supernova 1300W• Asus VG278H & nVidia 3d Vision

Top right corner mate, are a bunch of points, might be the probe/solder points. Don't forget, they're actually still working on it, so what we've seen so far won't be the finished retail product 😉

From what I've read, it's an improvement on the RIVE and supersedes it. A ton of exclusive man-hours were placed into the development of the board.

The question is what real world gain will the average user see above the current RIVE. For those on air/water it's doubtful you'll reach higher clock speeds in Ivy Bridge-E with the Black Edition regardless of how much time was spent on it. I'd say the only advantage may be in the extreme overclocking, particularly for the memory, and a few integrated hardware improvements like the additional SATA, audio and wireless 802.11ac. But if you have a dedicated sound card and no need for integrated wireless or the additional SATA ports then you may not gain much outside of the new board looks and a few new UEFI features.

Based on those assumptions I'm probably not going to wait over a month on the Black Edition since I've been waiting so long already to do my Ivy Bridge-E build. If it was going to be available next week then I'd wait but the end of October which will likely run on into November knowing ASUS is going to be a decent wait. And for existing RIVE owners I doubt there will be too much reason to upgrade to the BE not to mention the existing RIVE will likely be $80+ cheaper as I can't see this board coming in under $499.99 USD. The last Rampage III Black Edition was $559.99-$599.99 USD.

The Black Edition is a distillation of the Extreme (ocing) and Formula (gaming). It has all our 2013 innovations from the Maximus VI's. Previously the Extreme was always 'above' Formula, but on the M6 they are pretty much equal in terms of identity and unique investment.

For example: 'Extreme' OC Panel is bundled, but also it has 'Formula' SupremeFX Advanced and Sonic Radar. General upgrades are the Extreme Engine III and 2013 UEFI updates like Secure Erase etc

I don't mean it as a criticism, just as an observation. I'm well aware that many features of the RIVE are overkill for the average, or even average ADVANCED user. I just think it's worth noting for those considering a new build that we are not yet sure this RIV "Black" is actually a RIVE, for their planning.

The board is probably over kill for me too, but i'm getting one anyway and slapping it onto my test bench, when I can finally cough up the dough to get it built, which reminds me!!! I have to send an email to a friend in regards to some stuff 😄

Oh, absolutely. RIVE is totally overkill for me, too (what do I need sub-zero sensors for? lol), but there's still something sexy about having all that hardware available if/when I decide I do need it.

Once you go RIVE, you never go back. 😛
