Rampage 3 Extreme power issue

step1984
Level 7
I built my PC about two years ago and it has worked fine. I just bought a new 1TB Hard drive and tried to install it last night. I must have hooked it up incorrectly because it turned off a few seconds after pushing the power button.

I unplugged all of the hard drives and only plugged in the new one and the old one with Windows installed. (the third that is not hooked up right now is the backup drive.) The power button on the front of the PC will not work, but the start button on the MOBO will turn on the PC and everything works fine.

Is there a problem with the power supply? The light on the back of the power supply comes on when it is plugged in, so I'm not thinking that is the problem since the computer runs. I just can't use the power button as of last night when I installed the hard drive.

Any help would be great! (just making sure-- if a cord from the power supply has multiple hard drive hook ups, can I only have one HD to each main cord?)

Thanks,

Stephen

Sitting won't matter if it is the problem I have seen, and you left the PSU on. In that case, you'd have to turn off the PSU - or unplug power - for 45min. then try again. No, my question was, did you try pressing the power button dozens of times? You may or may not have to turn off the PSU and let the power diminish before subsequent tries (turning the PSU on again for said try).

Oh heck, daym fever, also try pressing the Q reset button for several seconds, with the PSU on.
And then:
Remove the CMOS batt for several minutes (this will also clear CMOS, so have your settings recorded) with power unplugged or switched off at the PSU. Then replace batt. Press & hold clear CMOS W/the PSU switched on and the computer off for several seconds. This will reset it to "new" condition, Asus calls it "CLRTC".

To answer the post above. Before opening up the machine to unplug drives, I unplugged from the wall and pressed the power button on the front for about 10-15 seconds. That is really the only thing I did. I'll give it a try tonight though.

Will it boot when you unplug the HDD that you added? If so:
Could be bad HDD.
Could be bad PSU: Won't supply the extra power required. Your PSU is a shoddy brand (sorry to be so blatant, but it is true). When you cheap out on the PSU the likelyhood of having assorted issues, such as this, or other issues like instability, greatly increases.

I'll see if I can test the HDD. I was able to boot it up with the existing windows drive and the new drive. I didn't realize it was a bad brand. Do you recommend a brand or a particular PSU for my setup. If I am going to have to replace things, I am looing at getting a full size case since my case is pretty tight on the MOBO and video card. So I might as well get a good PSU if it is bad.

Seasonic, PC Power and Cooling, Thermaltake toughpower, Corsair, and Antec are all very good PSUs.
This guide is a bit old, so the particular models are a bit obsolete, but the brands are still valid:
