Problems Booting Asus Maximus VII Hero

Good Morning,

Well I bought the asus maximus Hero the other day, installed the mobo, installed the CPU and GPU's and now cannot get it to boot to BIOS for first time.

The system has the following:
Intel Core i7 4770k,
ADATA XPG V1 AX3U2133W8G10-DR 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3
2 x Sapphire R9 290 GPU's,
2 x Kingston 256GB SSD, and
WD Black Caviar 4 TB Hard Drive.

I start the PC and the LED cycles through numerous codes, the Mem OK button lights up as if it is trying to tune the RAM, the CPU and VGA red LED lights light up in sequence and after leaving it for some time (about 30mins)the Error code comes up with 78.

I have removed the CPU, checked pins, reinstalled and seated the CPU correctly, removed GPU's and started, Cleared CMOS and so on and it still does the same.

I have read the manual and it says that the error code 78 ACPI failed to initialise

Please help so that I can actually get into the BIOS.

Are you sure that the standoffs are in the right place? Are the power connectors firmly seated? I would pull the gpu's and go to onboard graphics, pull the power plug to the ps and then remove the cmos battery and clear everything and let it sit powerless for a few minutes. Then try to boot with onboard graphics only and no other add in cards. If it will not respond box her up and take it back for a replacement. My first hero vii stopped booting and halted during post and I ended up taking it back and getting another one which works great.

What PSU are you using?
Try posting with only one stick of memory in each slot, then repeat with the other stick if needed.

Using a Silverstone 1200 PSU. Will check all the stand offs again and try the things as listed above.

Can I update the bios with CPU and all hardware removed ? If so how do I do it ? Would it be a BIOS issue ?

You can use the usb flashback to flash the board but you best read the manual and see the required steps before you attempt it.

I think I have the same problem, the q code 78 then changes from second to 00 factions and the cycle restarts. all started when two days ago the new bios update 2201.

Did you try clearing the cmos or getting another copy of the bios and trying the flashback again? Can you even get into the bios at all? I looked in the pdf manual and unfortunately I didn't see anything to address this situation. In times past when a failed flash bricks a board you have to rma it however I do not know if there's a recovery utility on the cd that came with the board to help fix this.

If your CPU and GPU lights are coming up, unless I am mistaken, it means there is a problem there.

I recommend you do the following:

1. Check that you have seated your CPU power connector properly.

2. Do this for your PCI-e power connector to your GPU as well.

3. As NemisisChild has suggested, try to boot with only one stick of RAM in (try all DIMM slots).

4. Clear your CMOS before attempting to boot.

5. You can also check that you haven't over-tightened any screws, especially on your CPU mounting bracket. This can sometimes be an issue.

ruzaos -

A 00 Q-Code is not a good sign. I suggest you clear your CMOS and see if you can boot from there.
