Pls. Help - Detecting 2 Keyboards Problem

Hi,

Model: ASUS Rampage IV Extreme
BIOS: 0604 x64

Problem(s):
1. I have only attached one USB Keyboard (NO PS/2 Keyboard) to the motherboard. When I go to BIOS under Advance -> USB Configuration, I see that my motherboard detect 2 USB Keyboards. When I disconnect that keyboard, motherboard detects 1 keyboard (No keyboard attached to it). Can someone please help me on how to fix this problem?

What I have tried so far:
a. I cleared the CMOS (Technician from ASUS told me) by basically removing battery from motherboard, wait 1 minute, while waiting, hold power bottom to clear all charges and then put everything back on (Didn't work).

b. Flash bios to newer version, 1101 (That didn't work).

c. Flashback (Tools -> Flashback) the BIOS (0604) (That didn't work).

Thanks
Mani

I also have 2 keyboards showing in the Device Manager which I can't remove. My only guess is that I have a Ducky mechanical keyboard with LED lighting so I'm thinking it needs a 2nd USB power source to enable lighting. Hmm, I haven't tried a USB 3.0 port since those provide more power than USB 2.0.

To those who have this issue, are your keyboards basic or fancy with LED lighting, USB hubs, etc.?

I've encountered this problem too, on a new rig that I've put together for my mother.
The motherboard is a 'Asus Z170-P' (with latest BIOS v3017), and when booting it says "2 Keyboards".

There are only two USB devices connected to this computer..
* A 'Logitech K310' keyboard (no fancy LEDs or anything)
* A 'Logitech G303' mouse

Don't know if the issues that I'll be describing here has to do with the "2 Keyboards" thingy, but I've encountered some serious issues, which just might be related to hardware detection.

This new rig that I've built ran just fine the first day, until I installed an extra DVD drive (a 'LiteOn iHAS124-14').
..then the problems begun.
For the most part, the computer refused to start (no reaction when pressing the power button).
It seemed to have a mind of its own, and would only start up when it felt like it.
Naturally, I disconnected the newly installed DVD drive, but to no use.
So, I cleared the CMOS and it seemed to be OK again.
But the next day, the problems were back..
Not only would it refuse to start, but when it did, it would boot to the UEFI, and sometimes the monitor wouldn't even turn on!

I searched up and applied some recommended UEFI settings (which apparenly have fixed similar problems for other Asus motherboard owners):
* Fast Boot: Disabled
* Launch CSM: Auto
..and I've set the primary hard drive (an Intel SSD 540s 480GB) as the first boot device.
Seems OK again for now, but I don't trust it, and I really don't like the idea of using such an unstable motherboard.

After contacting the shop where I bought it, I got a refund, and I've ordered a 'MSI Z170A PC MATE' instead.

The 'Asus Z170-P' is the second Asus motherboard I've bought (the previous one was a 'Asus Rampage IV Black Edition'), and both boards have suffered from major issues!
With the 'Asus Rampage IV Black Edition' I were unable to use more than two RAM modules (2x4GB)..
When installing four modules (4x4GB), Win8.1Pro,x64 would just crash all the time!
Of course, I tested the modules, and they were all OK.
Also, these were 'Corsair CMD16GX3M4A2800C12' modules, which are specifially listed by Asus to be compatible with the motherboard.
I though that the issue might get fixed in a BIOS update, but no..
The last BIOS for this board was a beta version, released back in July, 2014.
They didn't even bother to provide one last stable release.

Don't reckon I'll ever be buying a third Asus motherboard. 😞

And BTW; This forum is messed up too!:

Thanks for your contribution. I guess we have no choice but either to put up with what appears to be a cosmetic issue, or try a different manufacturer.

Like I said; I don't know if the problems that I had with the 'Asus Z170-P' were related to the "2 Keyboards" phenomenon, but it definitely had some hardware detection issues.

On top of that, it couldn't even keep time properly (the date and clock kept changing after each reboot).
I took out the battery and tested it, and it was OK, so I've got no idea what might have been causing it.

Anyway, I've replaced the 'Asus Z170-P' with a 'MSI Z170A PC MATE' now, and it's rock stable!
Not only is this MSI board a bit cheaper than the Asus board, but it comes with more connectors too:
* 6 SATA ports (vs 4 on the Asus board)
* 6 USB 3.0 ports at the back (vs 2x2.0 + 2x3.0 on the Asus board)
* 3 SYSFAN, a.k.a. CHAFAN connectors (vs 2 on the Asus board)
* 2 CPUFAN connectors (vs 1 on the Asus board)

- Problem solved!

Glad to see you were able to get your PC running stable. I'll also be considering either MSI or Gigabyte in the near future. :cool:

Same here Asus z77 Thunder Fx

No real issues just a named usb port or rather misnamed.

If fixed or for future bios on newer mobo`s Rajas----------
Would be nice to name the usb`s ourselves ???
Id luv to plug in whatever and name it myself.....would be a nice feature no one else has, competition wise Yes???

Send me a fat cashiers check Rajas for the idea.
Imagine naming whatever you plug into a usb port and you can name the device yourself if a permanent use.

I always have my Fx sound pluged into usb.....nice if I could name it Usb 1 Thunder Fx........see that on boot bios screen.

Another way around this Folks is to change in the bios......show bios screen for 1 second......hard to see then....

Peace out

did they ever come up with a fix for this problem?

I have a asus Z170 gaming board and on boot I started noticing from day one out of the box, three keyboards and two mice LOL
it's kind of funny, yet really sad on asus's part.

This is an intended feature of advanced keyboards to allow N-Key rolling they emulate many keyboards to do so.

Thanks for the explanation Frikencio!
