(Overclocking) ASUS Rampage IV formula + i7-3820.

Title says it all, I managed to overclock this beast CPU "i7-3820" to an astonishing 4624.93 MHz!! (with ease) using the formula board the voltage is really low "only using Vcore of 1.33V" I will try to reach 5Ghz shortly. heat is really stable in a very hot room the H100 mamanged to keep my temps well under 60c.

Yeah, I was thinking about it and seems logical. The only way to get past 4300 with a locked multiplier is with the base clock.

The trouble I am having is when I increase the base clock it increase my RAM.

I was doing some calculations and found that if I set the base clock to about 112 then the CPU with a 43 will be around 4800 and my RAM will still run at 2133. Might have better stability not overclocking the RAM.

I will try this today after work and let you all know if I have success.

Hang about.

Forget about a BCLK of 112 or similar, very few CPU's will do that with any ease.

125 is where you start with this exercise my friend. What you then do is select your ram frequency accordingly. Really quite easy.

You can get above 5GHz if you have good cooling. A BCLK of 132 and the highest possible multi is about the upper limit that I have seen.

Hi Mate, any chance of some specific notes/list on your steps and settings?
Got the same setup R4F and i7 3820 with H100 and just looking at hitting 4.3 - 4.5 without my VCore going over 1.3V as Ive heard a bit of talk about the 3820 having some rapid degeneration if you over 1.350V. Rather safe than sorry.

Here are the settings I used last night to duplciate that.

BLCK 125
Multi 37x
Vcore offset mode +0.250

LLC set to regular

Please note that the voltage will be static with the 125 strap and does not drop down to default or lower when the CPU is ideal.

Is that through the BIOS or with TurboV EVO?
I have heard to OC i need to disable my "INTEL speed step"....

And when you say Vcore Offset is that me upping my Vcore by +0.250?

Hey J no problem mate.

I never use Turbo V for 24/7 over clocking, always use the BIOS. And for 24/7 I leave the Intel stuff alone, the days of needing to disable all those things are long gone. I even bench 3D at 6.4GHz on my CPU with the Intel stuff enabled.

The thing you have to decide is if you want the voltage to lower when you are not using the CPU or not. If you do not then you use the 125 strap to overclock. If you do want the voltage to lower then you use the 100 strap to overclock. You could still reach 4.4GHz with the 3280 CPU assuming your CPU can manage 107BCLK and the 43x multi. 🙂 Remember it is all about cooling here. If your cooling is not up to the task do not aim so high.

Using the H100 for My CPU. General feeling is cooling should be good.

will mostly be used for gaming so only need the speed when Im benchmarking or playing games

So... would running 125x36 at 1.350V give me a good OC?

My thoughts are this. Run your system at the 100 strap. Use the highest multiplier you can use. 43 or what ever it is with the CPU.

That gives you a solid 4.3 with out any BCLK changes. The voltage needed is way low, and you get the full benefit of all the Intel power saving modes. Your ram will work at the designed straps and therefore be less likely to cause you issues.

However if you do want 4.6 then it is pretty much up to your CPU to determine what voltage it will need. No two CPU's are the same.

Simple as that. 🙂

Does my cooling setup look good enough for what I'm trying to achieve?

noob question: are Strap and BCLK different settings...or the same thing? .....sorry dude

No n00b questions here dude, only n00b answers.

First question. H100 is good to go for 4.4 or 4.6.

Second question. I can give you a technical answer but that has no real value. Short answer is no they are not the same, but ASUS have made things simpler for users to use. So when you select the 125 strap your BCLK automatically changes to 125. That is the same as being on the CPU strap of 125 and having a BCLK of 100. This way prevents silly errors from happening that could hurt your system.

Juts remember if you do change your strop (or set BCLK to 125) that you need to look at your multi too, as your end frequency will be way higher than what it started out as.
