hello all, First post and hopefully in the future it will be a more knowledgeable post !!

Ok ill get right down to it.

SPECS: Crosshair v formula z, AMD FX 8120, 16gigs Corsair vengeance, 2 MSI GeForce 660 ti's
ASUS dvd optical drive, 2 sata 1tb hdd's Rosswell 1000w PSU.

Now for the headache, Ok this system originally started out with a sabertooth mobo, and a corsair hx750 psu, different ram as well, Initial build went great, no problems installed windows without a hitch, then after about 24 hours or so, it would randomly freeze. No artifacts on the screen or anything of the sort. Just froze and that was that, quick reboot and everything was peachy. This happened twice on the third go, it started freezing on win startup screen.


So doing what every guy does I tossed money at it ! read thru the forums looking for similar problems Found some similar but nothing quit like mine, so I went all in got new mobo, new psu set er all up nice neat and orderly. Now its not recognizing any boot devices, the optical drive doesn't spin up, cant tell on the hdd's its like the sata connection is non existent .

I've reset the bios, I've disassembled and reassembled, I've changed everything known to man, im at my wit's end, I know some of you are thinking take it to a pro, but I like to do things myself, only way to learn. So if your familiar with this issue show me some sympathy and help me out 😛 im dyiiiiiiiing here !!

I've researched threads, haven't seen anything covering this same problem, so if it HAS I apologize before hand.

You're saying different hardware is failing to spinup / be recognised - have you tried a different PSU ?

Forgive me for asking but are your drives getting any power? And make sure you're using the AMD SB950 SATA ports. Go into your BIOS and see if they show up on the Boot tab.

thank you for the replies, the optical drive is not spinning up, I upgraded my psu to a 1000w. No change, it act's like there is no power, but this is my third psu, 3 in a row cant be bad.

Chino when I got into the boot menu, it says that there is no boot devices at all, it acts like there not connected. I think ill take a multi meter to it in the morning and check to make sure there is power. After that ill pop back in here and give ya'll an update, once again I appreciate the replys.

Ok I checked voltage on the SATA cables, and I do have voltage coming TO the disk drives and also to the optical drives. When I got into the bios, it says there is no drives present, But I am getting voltage. This is getting frustrating !!

try changing the sata cables to new ones and see if that helps.

Update the BIOS on the motherboard

Another thing you can look into, which happened when my brother updated his motherboard, is the firmware on the HDDs - his 100% working HDD suddenly was not detected on the new build, all symptoms pointed at a failed drive until I updated it's firmware which gave it back compatibility with the new chipset on the board

Hello mate, us old farts have to stick together I think.


OK here is what I would do. Wonder over to the Microsoft site and download the Microsoft USB Tool. Now using a 4GB or bigger USB stick make a USB OS install device. No DVD's needed on modern systems in my view. 🙂

Next - flash your bios with a smaller FAT formatted USB stick. Do so via the EZflash2 utility that is in the tools menu in your bios.

Once you are done.

Remove SATA devices, leave only the drive you wish to install your OS on.

In bios F5 and enter.

F10 and enter to exit and save.

Assuming your hard drive has no OS on it and your USB stick is in the USB2 port the system will begin the OS install process automatically.

Have fun and let us know how it goes.


As to system not starting the key is the 12V EPS connectors for the CPU. If your Intel system works fine then you did it right, and know how to do it right.

If no joy post back here and we will take if from there.

OK I updated the bios to 1503, rebooted and still getting the same issue, as of 2 min ago, I was getting Qcode 66, and a boot message of something similar to you have no boot devices, install one or we can sit here all day....press any button when you have followed my instructions...muhahahahahahahaaa.. I SWEAR the dang thing is laughing at me !

Yeah that is to be expected if you do not have a OS installed on your hard drive. Do you have your OS USB drive connected?


If yes then F8 during the POST process to select the USB stick.
