Hi I have a maximus extreme z that I have been getting all sorts of problems with, Overclocking always fails, default settings can cause one of these problems when booting 8 times out of 10..
1- I'm running 2x ssd drives both with windows 7 64 bit installed sometimes while booting instead of getting the usual selection screen for which version of windows I want to load I just get a flashing cursor.. When it does work i get the flashing cursor for a couple of seconds and then i hear one of my data drives spin up and get the choice..
2- even when I get windows to load often windows hangs on the startup screen.
3- when I do get into windows sometimes the USB slots seem to be dead, mouse doesn't work , keyboard doesn't work and reset button on MB does not work and have to pull the plug.
4- If I get passed all this and can finally run a game after a minute or so the screen freezes with looping sound and am forced to pull the plug again.
5- For some reason lost the analogue onboard sound a couple of weeks ago , but have since installed separate sound card which is working..

I have for the first time just updated the bios and have done 6 reboots with none of the above errors so hopefully the bios update has fixed this..

One thing that does concern me is that I am running Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1866Mhz Memory Kit CL9 but the bios reads: target dram speed 1333 mhz .. Is this something I have to change in the bios manually or should it recognise that I have 1866mhz installed?

Lot of things going on so I will have to rely on you guys to point me in the right direction of what could be causing the issues before I attempt the auto over clocking ..

try manually selecting the memory speed in the BIOS instead of using the "auto" feature. this should allow you to get the right speed. also, i would manually set the DRAM timings as well. They can usually be fouund on the sticker on a stick of the RAM or on the manufacturers website.

-ASUS Rampage IV Extreme
-Intel i7-3930k @4.42GHz
-16GB CORSAIR DOMINATOR GT 2133MHz
-Corsair Force Series GT SSD 240GB
- 2x 3TB WD Caviar Black (RAID 1)
- XFX ProSeries 1250W PSU
-3x ASUS VE248Q 24" Monitor
- 2x XFX 7970R
- Xigmatek Elysium Black Case
- CORSAIR H100 CPU Cooler
- Logitech G500 Mouse

Tried setting the memory in Bios but got blue screen 3 times in a row so went back to load optomised settings..
All the original problems occured on the next 5 consecutive reboots until I was finally able to play my game..
Do you think all these issues are related or could it be a number of factors..

Hi,

Please try the following:

1: Make sure you are using BIOS version 1004 (latest)

2: Clear the CMOS

3: Make sure the RAM modules are in the RED DIMM slots

4:Ttry loading the XMP profile found within the BIOS

Let us know how you get on.

The first thing I would suggest you doing is reading the guide that are found at the top of the sub-forum. They are really well thought out and will provide the background information you need to make sense of what is going on.

You used the term 8 channel? Could you explain what you mean by that. If you are using 8 sticks of ram you will need to manually set your ram, as XMP will not in most cases work. The XMP profiles are for a single kit of ram.
To help us help you - please provide as much information about your system and the problem as possible.
