new build, seemed to work perfectly for a few hours, then turned off, won't POST

I built a new system last month. The system worked wonderfully for about 6 hours, no issues, including no over-heating problems on any
components that I could detect.

Suddenly, the system turned itself off. Now the system will not turn on, not POST. There is NO ERROR CODE on the motherboard. There are no
beeps or sounds of any kind. The LCD lights on the motherboard do come on when connected to the power supply.

I thought there might be a short of some kind. Re-seated and double checked the motherboard, CPU, memory, video card. No change, same
problem.

I've tried removing everything from the system, including the hard drive and memory (using only CPU, MB and PSU), no change, same problem.

I replaced the PSU with a brand new PSU (same model as the original) but no change, same problem.

I now believe this problem could be a motherboard failure (especially since there has not been any error code since the system failure). I hope I
am wrong and someone can give me some advice.

Below are the system components.

If the ps is supplying power but nothing is showing on the motherboard then it stands to reason that it has gone bad. Normally the led's on the board will light up if power is being supplied.

I bought one of those PSU testers and both the original PSU and the replacement test OK (with no load). I can imagine 1 new PSU to be bad, but it seems very unlikely both new PSUs are bad.

Do the onboard QCODE or MemOK! troubleshooting LEDs indicate anything? Have you tried the trusty little Clear CMOS button?

Your PSU seems to be good, but have you connected all the necessary mobo ATX power inputs? (And, just to be sure, the optional EZ Plug power input?)

You could have bad RAM or bad CPU or bad mobo or (if you're lucky) just bad BIOS firmware.

Can you test all your hardware components (including the PSU) in another machine?

Have you tried flashing the latest-greatest (1401) BIOS?

No QCODE , no MemOK light. Both the START and RESET buttons light. When I push the START button I hear a couple of "clicks" or "sizzles" from the PSU, but
nothing. No fan motion, nothing.

Yes, it was running perfectly for almost 6 hours (several reboots during that time as well). Then it just turned itself off and nothing after that.

You could have bad RAM or bad CPU or bad mobo or (if you're lucky) just bad BIOS firmware.

I was using the original BIOS firmware. I didn't do any experimenting with the BIOS.

Unfortunately, no. I will probably just purchase everything else again and just go part by part until I find the problem (assuming I can't find it soon).

I don't think I can flashing the BIOS as I can't get any response from the motherboard.

I'm using Corsair Hydro Series H90 140 mm High Performance Liquid CPU Cooler .

It seemed to be performing well.

I pulled the CPU, did not see any bent or damaged pins.

Support for ASUS seemed quite helpful. Gave me a few ideas. I'll update after I've gone through their suggestions.

RMA the board and don't use the original PSU with the new one. If there is a PSU fault, they can kill the board. In such cases, connecting a new PSU after that happens doesn't really help 🙂

I really hope this is the case for my situation.

I have a THIRD Maximus VII shipping to me, with a THIRD PSU because i am experiencing the exact same situation as OP. I just got these parts last Friday and on first boot the machine worked, and i was able to get into the bios for all of 2-3 minutes before it shut down completely after attempting to boot off of an existing SSD hard drive. Since then it will not power on or POST at all.

Been through all the troubleshooting steps and have scoured the Google looking for info.

After trying two new motherboards, and two different PSUs, two sets of RAM chips, in and out of case, flashed the bios w/ the asus M7H.CAP rename method, tried without a gpu, checked cpu pins, etc everything looks OK.

The ONLY difference i can get is when i power on the system while only the 24-pin cable is plugged in. The CPU fan and the PSU fan will continue to spin but I still get no image on the monitor on hdmi/vga/dvi. When both the 8-pin EATX12v cable and the 24-pin are plugged in (both required for the system to actually work) that is when the cpu and psu fans will only budge for brief moment then shut off completely. No beeps our sounds at all.

At this point my only scenarios are:
-the CPU is bad. A brand new i7 4790K Devils' Canyo (which is possible but least likely in my experience.)

-My original PSU (an older XIGMATEK NRP-MC 750W) that was used on the first boot of BOTH motherboards) could be causing a short with the motherboard and therefore, the 2nd GPU i tested (brand new Corsair CS850M from Fry's) would not have worked on the 2nd motherboard either.

-A brand new EVGA GTX 980 was in the motherboard for the first boot attempts on both motherboards. Maybe the GPU shorted out the board? The system will still not POST without the GPU.

-The first boot attempts with both motherboards were done inside my 10-year old PC case that has housed multiple upgrades through the years. When I tried removing the motherboard from the case to inspect the risers, i noticed one riser was not in use and the motherboard was definitely resting on top of it where there was not a designated screw hole in the motherboard. Perhaps this caused a short that fried the motherboard?

-The second motherboard i tested with (same model, bought brand new from Frys) experienced the exact same issue as the original one. Or the new PSU i bought was bad as well.

If all else fails it just has to be the CPU...

Frustrated to say the least!

Anyway, will post a resolution when one is found.
