MVG Q Code 20

Hey guys,

I occasionally get this Q code when booting.

I'm running a 3770k with 4x4GB Crucial Ballistix 1866.

I have tried all the usual suggestions. Completely stripped the system checked the CPU socket and rebuilt. I have cleared and updated the BIOS and tried tuning VCCIO. I had this at 1.2v and VCCSA 1.1v.

With two DIMM's installed I get the same error 20 but as above, only occasionally.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Would be great to get it booting 100% of the time.

Cheers

Hello Bluntwrapped.

If no errors in memtest86, it's possible your cpu cooler might be a little too tight. Try remounting it and just make it snug.

Hi guys thanks for the speedy reply. I was just about to head to bed when I created the post.

I haven't tried memtest86+ on each stick of ram individually. I will try this and see how I get on.

I have changed the CPU cooler over to a Raystorm waterblock and I the code still shows as above.

Does the 20 code refer to anything specifically? I have had a look at the manual but this one isn't shown.

I have the maximus v extreme and the codes are the same as your board. Code 20 is not shown in my manual either so we are up in the air about code 20.

When you get code 20, are there any red LED lights lit up on your motherboard? If there is, look closely beside the red lit LED, it will tell you what it is and could point to the problem.

Thank you Chino,

In that case we will wait for the memtest results.

Don't know why or how the motherboard can give a code that is not listed in the manual.

Just running memtest at the moment. No errors so far with two passes. Is it important I run each stick individually?

I'm testing all four at once, thinking if there's any errors I'll then test each stick individually. Is memtest more likely to detect an error if run on a single stick at a time?

Not necessarily. You can test all 4 at the same time. 2 passes and no errors, looks to me like your ram is fine.

Was this a brand new ballistix ram kit or an older kit? And can you list it for us please.

Wow that was quick thanks again for the reply.

I bought two kits directly from Crucial.

The code shows up with all 4 and only 2 sticks installed. I guess this rules out any conflict between the two kits.
