Maximus VI Hero- No video and code 55

Good evening everyone,

I've been through hell this week with my computer. First off, my original build no longer functions, it just attempted to power on for leas than a second. So I took it to a shop after trying to fix it for over 6 hours with no luck and he determined the mobo was bad. Since it was the old 1156 chipset, it was smarter to just upgrade at this point. So, my build is as follows:

Vi Hero
I5 4690k
Gtx 650
8GB Gskill Trident (f3-2400c10d-8gtx)
Evga 500w
1tb HD

I originally had my older power supply in, a corsair 750w, and it did the same thing as my old computer, attempted to boot but it lasted less than a second before powering down. So I switched out the power supply for the 500w and it booted right up. Unfortunately, it booted up without video and the 55 code. I reseated everything and tried using the onboard video (with the gtx 650 out of the mobo) and the gtx 650. The hdmi input on my monitor works with my ps4 so that's ruled out. I've also tried two different hdmi cables. I'm seriously going to have a stroke if I can't figure this out. I'm at University, so my options for help and doing things are limited. Classes start next week so I need this computer functional by Monday; it's my only computer that I have access to. I'm getting desperate and frustrated enough to just take it to the local pc shop here and get charged $500+ to get this thing running. I'd prefer not to do that, but like I said, I need this running.

Hi Pheonix699 and Welcome to ROG, I would like to help you but your post is a little confusing.Quote: So I switched out the power supply for the 500w and it booted right up?

The post (power on self test) is the first action when you press the power button, and if all is ok it will hand over to your OS to boot from.
If post stops at Qcode 55 then post is not seeing your DIMMs or none have been installed and you would not be able to boot.

So first thing to check are your DIMMs seated correctly.
First try with just one DIMM in the first slot and try switching around, If still stopping on Qcode 55 then your DIMMs are suspect or you may have some contamination in the DIMM slots.
First rule out this issue and see if post advances.

Have you updated your Bios and what version are you on?

i assume its booting but I cannot see the video feed, hence part of my problem. The power stays on, so it doesn't restart or anything, but it throws a 55 code and that's as far as it gets. I've tried resesting the ram as well as swapping it out and only putting one in at a time. I do not know what bios or anything besides what is on the box it came in.

Remove your GPU and see if it boots with video attached to the onboard GPU only. This would allow you to get into the BIOS. I had to do this on a Asus Z87 Pro upon initial setup which is my steambox pc. After getting it to boot with onboard and setting the BIOS up properly (perhaps updating it too), all is good with my GTX 670ftw card thereafter.

I tried removing the gpu and using the onboard but there was no change.

Hi Pheonix699. There is no guarantee this will work but you may have no option as it may be your Bios

If your Qcode is not progressing past 55, then it is not booting and you will not be able to enter Bios.

You will need to flash your Bios to the latest version and to update for 4th gen core processors, (if not already done), to try and see if the system will boot.
The only way to do this (as you cannot boot or enter Bios) is to use the ROG connect port on your IO panel.

Follow these instructions carefully:

1. Go to ASUS support here: http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/MAXIMUS_VI_HERO/HelpDesk_Download/
2. Select your OS system, then from the drop down menu choose Bios which is 1603 and download to an empty (formatted fat32) USB stick.
3. At the same time go to Bios utilities and get the renamer tool and download this to the same USB stick.
4. Activate the renamer and it will convert the Bios file to M6H.CAP ( check it has done its job)
5. Power down your system so there is only power to the MB.
5. Insert the USB stick into the ROG flashback port and press the flashback button for 3 secs till it starts to blink.

When it stops you are done. If unsure of anything refer to your manual section 2.2 page 2.11

It might be a good idea to print out these instructions.

Later if you are able to boot, You should also obtain the 4th gen updater from support.

There are risks in updating Bios and do not disconnect power to your MB during flashback.

If this is your only system you will have to use a friends or another computer to download to your USB stick.

Good Luck and please report back if you have any problems.

Thank you for everyone's prompt and helpful replies. They are very much appreciated. I hope it is just the bios because I don't have time to return the board for another one. I am not able to acces another computer until my roommates get back either tomorrow or Sunday. I will certainly post here with my findings, and hopefully good news. Its quite disheartening that this board seems to be having widespread problems like this. I hate buying prebuilt computers though.

Also, what happens if my video still doesn't work? It seems like the motherboard is the problem though because the odds of the ram, gpu, and onboard video all being bad is virtually nonexistent.

Like I said, there is no guarantee updating Bios will fix it, but we have to go at it one step at a time.
Some pre 4th gen boards with older Bios need the Bios update for the 4th gen Haswell chips. I am not familiar with all MBs but some of them require a new pre programmed Bios replacement to be installed and I hope this is not your case.

Once you have a bootable system then you can update for the 4th gen Bios update which is done in windows.
These 4th gen Haswell processors have much more capability and performance for example, A much more powerful graphics engine than previous Intel® microarchitectures for one, and the way the CPU IMC handles your DIMMs is another, but the Bios must be able to address these new features. So your GPU and DIMMs are still suspect till we update and see what your Qcode readout is when next you start your system.

See how you go after the update.

Unfortunately, that did not work. I still get the code 55 and no video. I followed the instructions to a "t" as well. I was really hoping it would. 😞

Edit: I switched around a stick of memory this time and it booted but it says it was unable to start Windows. Right now its going through the "Startup Repair" thing. Any ideas now that things have changed?

Also, it doesn't throw the code 55 but instead it throws an "AO or A0" code.

Hello Pheonix699

Code 55 in your manual says memory not installed, but doesn't always mean it's the memory. Check that it is seated and clicked into place.

If this does not help, try loosening your cpu cooler a touch sometimes uneven pressure on the cpu can cause code 55.

If no help, remove your cpu cooler and cpu and inspect the cpu socket with a magnifying glass in good light for any bent or misaligned pins. Make sure they are ALL evenly spaced. Look close and carefully.
