Maximus VI Hero: Faulty resolution

Laminate

Need to RMA VGA card, so the first time I have used hdmi on 27" monitor (usually use it on 24").

It will only do 2560 x 1440 in 30hz, which is laggy and unacceptable.

I am using a hdmi to DVI-D dual link cable. Have tried setting custom resolution in Intel control panel, get error message "The user defined resolution excesses the maximum bandwidth capacity" even for 35hz.

VI Hero specs page:

"Integrated Graphics Processor
- Supports HDMI with max. resolution 4096 x 2160 @ 24 Hz / 2560 x 1600 @ 60 Hz"

So clearly this should work, but is not.

Its impossible to go over 30hz 2560 x 1440 on HDMI to DVI adapter since HDMI is single link and DVI can't provide frequencies that would make it possible. It's not the limitation of your M6 Hero optput, it is working correctly, it's the limitation of your monitor input. You would need some kind of HDMI1.3+ to Dual Link DVI active converter box to make it work.

Monitor has DVI and displayport. Would you suggest hdmi to displayport cable? Or adaptor for hdmi cable of course.

To be honest I've never seen HDMI_OUT > DisplayPort_IN cables (I've only seen DisplayPort_OUT > HDMI_IN and since there are active converters in those cables they do not work in both ways) so I can't tell if they would support the higher frequencies. But if you manage to find cable like this that says it supports HDMI1.3 or above you should be OK.

This looks like it would do the job I think:

Unfortunatley this one looks like it connects DisplayPort Source to HDMI Display and you need something that works in the other direction. As I've mentioned I'm not even sure that such device exists since this kind of setup is really unique.

Not going to get into a long discussion about HDMI cables but what spec is your cable but as far as I know you will need a HDMI 1.4 compliant cable to show high res.

Now to your issue, what is the monitor that you are using please list the part number.

No matter what version a cable is if you are connecting HDMI to DVI you are limited by DVI to 165Mhz signal and by HDMI to a single link connection. combination of this two limitations limits the bandwidth of the link to 4.95 Gbit/s (basically HDMI1.0) so it is impossible to achieve as high res as he would like @60hz refresh rate.

@Laminate i did a quick search for you and found only 2 devices that do HDMI Source to DP Display conversion and unfortunately they are expensive ($90-120) and only support resolutions up to 1920x1200 so they don't meet your requirements. I think the best solution for you would be to buy a cheap GPU with DP or DualLink DVI out. (I assume your setup is temporary and you are going to buy more expensive GPU in the future?)

Thanks for the replies.

I tried the DP adaptor today. It does fit, as in the hdmi cable fits into the adaptor and that fits into the monitor, and the light on the adaptor comes on, but that is all that happens. No picture. Tried 2 different cables and same result.
